Day 1: We recommend that you plan to arrive around mid-day. Swiss Travel and car rental representatives will meet you upon arrival at Liberia Airport. Your journey begins with a scenic two-hour drive in your 4WD rental car to the Celeste River, near the Tenorio Volcano National Park. Celeste River is a beautiful natural wonder of Costa Rica, with its spectacular color coming from different volcanic minerals. Check into Celeste Mountain Lodge (or similar hotel) for one night.

Day 2: Take a morning hike to the Celeste River and view many different species of birds and vivacious flora. Or, head into the rolling hills and rushing creeks to visit Bijagua Village and discover true Costa Rican rural life. Later, drive to the Arenal area (about 1.5 hours). Take your time and really enjoy the beautiful, scenic drive! Once in the Arenal area, check-in at Casa Luna Hotel (or similar hotel) for two nights.

Day 3: Day at leisure to visit optional attractions including Arenal Volcano National Park, La Fortuna Waterfall, Canopy Tour, and the Hanging Bridges. Or, just relax at your hotel and gear-up for the exciting adventures to come in the next couple of days!

Day 4: Enjoy a beautiful drive bordering the Arenal Lake to the Monteverde Cloud Forest area. Here, you will see small settlements devoted to agriculture and livestock and protected cloud forest reserves which provide green scenery and fantastic bird watching. Check-in at Monteverde Cloud Forest Lodge (or similar hotel) for two nights.

Day 5: Day at your leisure to enjoy options such as the Monteverde and Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserves, the Hummingbird Gallery, Butterfly Farm, Serpentarium, Trapiche Sugar Cane Mill, and the Sky Trek through the forest canopy and bridges. 

Day 6: Descend to the lowlands of Guanacaste and Tamarindo Beach. This route will provide you with panoramic views of the Gulf of Nicoya, then you will discover beautiful views of the rainforest on the Pan-American Highway. The sunsets on the beach are spectacular! Check-in at Wyndham Tamarindo Hotel (or similar hotel) for two nights.

Day 7: Day at leisure. Enjoy the beach, canopy tours, river rafting, hiking, or fishing. This region is known for its extensive nature reserves that house an incredible concentration of flora, fauna, and natural beauty. Visit Rincón de la Vieja National Park's active volcano and thermal mud baths.

Day 8: Departure. Drive to Liberia Airport (LIR) and drop off your rental car mid-morning.

  • Two (2) night accommodations at Wyndham Tamarindo Hotel (or similar hotel), Tamarindo Beach.

Please note: Automatic vehicles are available for an extra cost. Family option with two double rooms and full-size automatic SUV (Toyota Prado or similar vehicle) also available. Entrance fees to National Parks are not included. Drivers must be at least 21 years of age and have their valid driver's license, passport, and credit card for car rental. Depositsare held on the customer's personal international credit card and range from $800-$1500, however a flat deposit of $100 is held when Full Coverage Insurance is purchased. Mandatory Insurance alone with higher deposit: $18 per day. Additional Insurance for Full Coverage ($100 deposit only): $15 per day in addition to the $18. Fuel not included. Unlimited mileage included. GPS and/or child seats available (additional charge) if requested in advance. One additional driver free of charge besides the main driver of the vehicle.
