Disappointed by Viva Tangerine by Wyndham in DR

Generally, I do not publish negative reviews, but in the case of this resort, I feel I must justify the reason for the rating of 2 out of 5 stars – and why I will not return here again. Of course, I understand that other people might have had positive visits, but I feel this story should be taken into account. Along with my family, I spent a week here in late December 2024. First, the resort itself is rather small (i.e. it is narrow) and although the grounds themselves are clean (I walked barefoot in many places on stone slabs), the buildings on the resort are old and no amount of fresh white paint can hide that fact (I am guessing that these buildings are 25+ years old). The rooms felt dated and worn out. The beds were reasonably comfortable (in our room 2602). And although we did not see mold itself, I feel like given the high humidity and the fact that the rooms had a dank smell to them, the rooms were just not a pleasant place to spend time. And here, I want to make it clear: this is not connected to the cleaning staff and their efforts. They were helpful, kind and did as much as they could. However, in our room, there were just hooks for towels – so after you showered, you could only hang your towel and not spread it on a drying rack (so your towel would be damp several hours later). Clearly, these rooms were built cheaply without much thought a long time ago and things have only gotten worse with time. Ultimately, in 2023, I had been to a resort in Cuba that had been built much more recently and it was much more inviting and comfortable. The food at Viva Tangerine Wyndham also was mediocre at best. I mean, even in Latin America, the supposedly-fried plantain slices were often disappointing in taste. While presentation-wise, the food looked good, I have been to resorts where you actually wanted to eat it – not just eat it because you are hungry. And the “a-la-carte” on-site restaurants were not any better. The Mexican restaurant food was particularly bad. Again, this is not the fault of the staff --- clearly, it is management (either on-site or at corporate HQ) that is trying to save a buck... Sadly, the situation with the drinks at the bar is the same: I would suggest just sticking to the draft Dominican “Presidente” beer (which is very light), but at least it is beer. The mixed drinks were not very tasty and this is because they are made with flavoured liquids from large bottles called “classico” (so, you have whisky-flavoured or tequila-flavoured bottles as well as artificial fruit flavoured ones). I only had a few of these drinks during the week – and there is only one bar on the resort, so you have to line up to get a drink (and the staff working there deserve a tip, because they are clearly over-worked). The one large pool on the resort is nice --- and useful for families with small kids. Daily music activities take place near the pool (and they continue in the evenings). Before arriving, I emailed the resort and requested a room away from this area in order to be able to sleep in the evenings (but I was close enough to hear the music). At least there are many lounge-chairs on the property and the beach so that you should be able to get one to lie down and relax. The beach and the sea are also disappointing unless you are doing kite-surfing. The wind is quite strong and although this is not a problem when outside, it does mean that the sea has strong waves --- and so, you will not be able to have a relaxing swim. Rather, you will spend 10 minutes throwing yourself against the strong waves and then leave exhausted. And although the beach itself stretches for a long distance, there is also an area where effluent is spilled into the sea. So, yes, sunbathe or walk on the beach and even get your toes wet, but this area is best for kite-surfers. And on top of all of this, in December 2024, there were floods in this geographic area and as a result, there was water contamination. Yes, bottled water is provided in your room, but we still got traveller's diarrhea --- (I admit that I had lettuce in my salad from the buffet).  I had been to 3 other countries in Latin America before visiting the Dominican Republic and this was the only country where I had gotten this stomach infection. Sadly, even if I had not gotten this infection, I still think that this resort is NOT WORTH VISITING AGAIN. If other visitors enjoyed it, then I am happy for them, but I feel that I could have gotten better value for my money elsewhere.

    Disappointed...

We were there as a couple December 16 to the 27th. We were in building 4 and had no hot water. After 4 days of getting the run around and pushing the issue, they changed us to the building above the buffet and bar and everything was good. The buffet was mediocre at best except for the Christmas eve gala. It was excellent. The Melt (Fusion) à la carte was absolutely terrible. Mexican and Italian were good. Only 1 bar so line ups can be long. The pool was filthy by the end of our stay. Animation was repetitive and some of the team members were always yelling. Michael Jackson show was good. Silent party was a lot of fun. It rained so much that rooms on ground floor flooded out and the lobby had about 12 inches of water... which left almost everyone at the bar area and it doesn't accommodate all the guests. We enjoyed the Beach Side restaurant (on the resort but not included). We also enjoyed walks on the beach to the many restaurants along the beach. All in all, weather aside, we would never go back.

    Amazing Vacation

The entertainment was amazing! The beach is 5 stars. The peoples were very nice and amazing friendly. The show at night was fabulous. The dancers were super good. The food at the restaurant was good. I wish it was warmer. But it was an amazing experience. I highly recommend it!! Thanks

    Worse resort I’ve visited!

I never write reviews! It’s so poor I had to write ! At our arrival, the snack bar had no plates! Plates have been an issue all week! The alcohol was also lacking, the only thing they always had was beer! The rest was sporadically available! The a la carte restaurant are only available if you book at midnight! It’s always full when you go to guest services! Our room hasn’t been renovated in over 10years! The shower was the only renovated part! But there was a window without curtain that gave our neighbours a first row seat to our showers! Very disappointing, I don’t understand how this has more then 1 or 2 stars! The staff wasn’t welcoming either! The only time they smiled was when they wanted to sell you something! I always enjoyed Dominican Republic but never again will I come to this resort.

    Stay away.

December 2024 I have never been so happy to be home. I was counting down the days after the first day of being there. That is not normal and not how you should feel when you're on vacation and have spent your hard-earned money. I'll start with the positives. The resort layout is nice and convenient. It is also clean and the staff is nice and do their best. The beach is nice because there is no seaweed but it's really not swimming friendly, especially for kids. The waves are very big and strong and the flag is always red. I don't blame the resort for that. The negatives- The food is VILE! As of the end of the first day, we all had diarrhea. The buffet is really disgusting and you see the same food recycled, morning, lunch and dinner. Literally disgusting. We couldn't find anything to eat other than dry rice. Even the black beans were just watery slop. How can a Carribean country not know how to put out a decent black beans and rice dish? Gross dishes that you don't even know what they are. Veggies and fruit tasted like garbage too. I can't stress enough how gross the food was. I lost 4 pounds in one week. There is no way this is a 4-star resort. Before going I did my due diligence and read the reviews. I am seriously SHOCKED that people say they loved it and would go back. I would not go back if they offered me a week free. Yes, that's how bad it was. Do yourself a favour and find somewhere else to go even if it costs you more, or don't go at all because counting down the hours for your vacation to end is not normal. If you want to use this place as a hub that's not a bad idea. Rent a car and be gone all day and only return to sleep. Forgot to mention, they knew we were 3 in the room and would always leave 2 towels, zero smaller towels for your hair ( girls) and 2 bottles of water, again despite them knowing we were 3 in the room. Again, I don't blame the staff, I blame the hotel for cutting corners. All in all - clean place, nice layout, VILE VILE VILE food, no towels, something is wrong with the water too and they don't have bottles other than the 2 the cleaning lady will leave you.
