Hotel Overview

The vision and dream of respected hotelier Laurance S. Rockefeller. More than 37 years ago, he chose a patch of black lava in an inaccessible area, with two beautiful beaches, to create a work of art that changed the Big Island of Hawaii. Rockefeller envisioned a resort of world-class standards - complete with the hotels, golf courses and homes.

The first step was Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in 1965. In 1994, the second half of the dream was fulfilled with the opening of Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. Steeped in Aloha, the classic elegance perpetuates the true Hawaiian traditions of the islands. And in June 2018, the hotel officially became The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort. The contemporary feel of Westin Hapuna Beach Hotel is manifested in its bold nature. Working together, these two distinct hotels comprise Mauna Kea Resort and create an outstanding experience.

All guestrooms are ocean-facing revealing the long inviting expanse of Hapuna Beach, each with spacious private balcony and double doors allowing for the trade winds to breeze through. Luxurious interiors are highlighted by a selection of natural materials, including rich woods and fine fabrics. The palette of chosen colors reinforces the sand, sea, and sunset environment afforded by the hotel's pre-eminent location.

The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort is situated on 32 oceanfront acres, nestled in natural bluffs overlooking the silky white sands of Hapuna Beach. Hapuna Golf Course features 18-holes of Scottish links-style championship golf designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay. Taking advantage of the dramatic natural contours of the land from the shoreline to 700 feet above sea level, it offers spectacular views of the Kohala Coast and Pacific Ocean while majestic Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and the Kohala Mountains form the backdrop.

In ancient times on the resort site, freshwater springs bubbled to the surface during heavy rainfall. These artesian fountains provided respite and renewal for travelers along the Kohala Coast. Thus the area was named "Hapuna" or "Spring of Life" in the Hawaiian language. This depiction of water became the symbol for the The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort.

    Great honeymoon stay, would recommend.

Fantastic property, and great staff. The breakfast in the open-air restaurant was something I truly looked forward to each morning. We stayed by the adult pool for most of the week, and it was never too crowded. Wait staff was also incredibly attentive. The rooms really aren't "ocean front", but if you get a higher floor (you walk in on floor 6) you'll have a better view. My only complaint, and this was kind of a bummer, is we arrived on the day the Ironman competition was taking place. From the Kona airport, there's really only one main road to get there, and it was closed. The resulting detour would have taken hours as compared to a 25 minute or so drive. We decided to wait it out at the airport. It would have been INCREDIBLY helpful for the hotel to have given a heads up about this. Essentially, that the only road to our property is closed. Yes, this is well known to the locals, but not something I would have thought to look up prior to arrival. Disappointing that this isn't something that was mentioned ahead of time, but not enough that I wouldn't come back to this delightful property.

    Hotel Cabana Misadventure

Sigh. Stayed there last month and scheduled to return this weekend for my birthday, with an excellent local rate. When I booked, arranged for a cabana at the adult pool which was important to us. Unfortunately in their changing to a new system our cabana reservation was lost and no cabanas by the adult pool were still available, which I discovered when I called them a couple days before to make sure all was in order, so I ended up cancelling. Concierge told me this has happened to many others. True, they let me cancel without penalty and later the pool manager offered a cabana by the family pool after we cancelled the stay, but there was no coordination with the hotel manager to assist in sorting it out to restore the cancellation, do they not talk to each other? It was not well handled by the hotel and was their error. I don’t think they really care much about the customers. Plus side, during our recent stay the beach is looking a lot better and great pool side service. One last slight quibble, as a Bonvoy titanium, we have never been offered any sort of upgrade or recognition other than a cursory acknowledgement at check in. Although to be fair, late chevk out to 1pm has been readily offered and once to 4pm.

    Amazing

This is my second stay and I will be back. The beds and bedding are incredibly comfortable, and the hotel is absolutely gorgeous. The food is also spectacular. You get both the pools and the beach. The only complaint I have is with the constant use of plastic cups and utensils, even at the restaurants.

You must experience the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort when visiting Hawaii Island!

We spend the last night at the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort and all I can say is WOW! This place is fabulous! right from the lobby you get a "take your breath away" view looking over the grounds, pool and white sand Hapuna Beach! Rooms are huge. And I think the thing that impressed me the most is the genuine friendliness of everyone of the staff. The bellmen are the first to greet you and they are full of energy and excited to welcome you. Front desk staff again, giving outstanding service and really making you feel welcome. Everyone one you walk buy greets you with a smile and are eager to chat with you. I don't know if the training crew that hires these employees just know how to do it or if the staff that they hire are just naturally eager to go above and beyond to make your stay magical! Or a combination of both, but either way, the staff is amazing! I have stayed in hotels and resorts all over the world and the staff at the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort has given me the best experience ever!

    Beautiful resort

This is a gorgeous resort. It's very spread out, so plan to walk a lot. The two pools were fantastic. The beach is quite deep, so the chairs aren't that close to the water. There's a little spot to snorkel where we saw some fish and a sea turtle. We also did kayaking in the morning, which was awesome. The breakfast buffet was fantastic and you can't beat the view. Lunch at the pool was always good. Most of the staff was friendly and helpful. They have onsite, free, self-service laundry for guests so we could pack a bit lighter. We took the shuttle to the sister hotel for dinner and sunset one night, which was lovely. I'd happily go back to this hotel.
