    A nice stay in Guanacaste

My wife and I had a wonderful time staying here. We stayed in the Westin Club and our room was great. This gives you access to premium alcohol, including a self-service bar at the clubhouse, a happy hour with snack and drink, and breakfast at Faisanella restaurant. All in all, worth the upgrade. Our 2 concierges for tower 2 were always available to help with booking reservations for food or transportation. That said, I recommend downloading the resort’s app and making restaurant reservations before you arrive - I believe they open each Friday afternoon for the following seven days. The food is the one thing that keeps me from giving a 5 star rating. Some meals we had were great, but overall the quality was inconsistent and at times lacking. Same for the cocktails at the restaurants. We really liked everything at Manglar, Bamboo, and Spirula. We found the other dinner restaurants not quite as good. The service at the restaurants was also somewhat inconsistent and could be better. Same for the Mitra Market buffet - some items were pretty good, others less so, and same for service. The grounds and property are beautiful and well maintained, as was our room. Both pools are nice and offer a mix of sun and shade. We spent more of our time at the Westin Club pool as it was a bit quieter and closer to our room. This resort sits right on the beach of Playa Conchal, but does not have dedicated beach cabanas or provide food/drink service on the beach. They do, however, provide lounge chairs you can check out right on the beach, and it’s not far to the nearest bar if you want to grab a drink. The beach is beautiful and I would highly recommend spending at least one sunset there. The gym had a decent selection of free weights, machines, and cardio equipment - treadmills, ellipticals, and cycling bikes. The gym has A/C but was still a bit warmer than ideal for working out. Would love to see it a bit cooler in there. We felt the location was great. The surrounding area was safe and you can definitely go for a walk, run, hike, or bike ride. There’s a few restaurants in Brasilito you could walk to if you really wanted, but also you can taxi or Uber. I saw some reviews complaining about long rides to the excursions in the mountains & rain forest, and while this is true (think 1.5-2 hrs each way depending on where you’re going), it’s going to be the same for any of the resorts and hotels along the pacific coast in Guanacaste. This did not bother us as the transportation we arranged both via tour companies and through Westin was great. Overall, would recommend and would stay again, though the one thing that might lead me elsewhere would be to book a non-all inclusive in hopes of paying for better food.

    Food poisoning

This is a nice resort with friendly staff. The adults only pool os quiet for couples and there are lots of restaurants on site. The only thing that let this down was that my husband got food poisoning from one of the restaurants here and when we let the concierge know, noone got back to us at all, which was very disappointing.

    I Feel Conflicted

The Pros: - Amazing, kind and friendly staff - Beautiful property - Large rooms that accommodate our family of 5 with comfort - Ample beach chairs and trees provide shade for the beach - Very easy to catch golf carts around property - Westin App made it convenient to book meals and activities such as Pickleball -Club/VIP pool was beautiful and quiet and a relaxing experience - Massage on the beach by Natalie (pink hat) was great - Erik arranging tours and jet skis was great. Our family had a great time on the jet skis. - Wildlife interactions were so cool! Monkeys galore! The Disappointments: - At the top of the list why we would NOT return would be the quality of the food. We are NOT huge foodies and are NOT super picky and our entire family just Kindof ended up dreading meals. We left property by mid-trip for most of our meals which was a bummer considering the amount we spent for all-inclusive. There was a GREAT variety of food at Mitra Market... but unfortunately a lot of it just flat out didn't taste that good. 2 mornings we had the GROSSEST bacon put on our plates...like 8 pieces half cooked, full of fat, clumped together in a bed of grease. Dinner one night we were advised how the short ribs were so amazing. They had sooooo much fat on them. Like both my husband and I took 3 bites and couldn't do it anymore. Our kiddos steak was first served raw, then when we returned it it came back cooked appropriately but it was SO fatty and chewy he literally told me his jaw hurt from chewing so much. Yikes. - Service was inconsistent. 2 nights we checked in for dinner with a hostess with ZERO line ahead of us and we waited over 20 minutes for a table. One night "our" table was right by the window by the hostess stand. We waited 35 minutes (!!!) as that table sat empty. When they went to seat us.... that table we had been starting at wide open was where they seated us. Just so strange. - Language barrier. While I completely understand that WE are the visitors to Costa Rica and English is not the native language, we did feel like some of their guest-facing staff (especially in food services) should have been more able to communicate with us or understand English. Probably 4 out of the 6 mornings at the buffet, we asked at the omelette station for our eggs to be prepared with no oil. The employee would nod, assemble the ingredients, and then literally squeeze a huge amount of oil out of a squeeze bottle into the pan before cooking the omelettes. We pretty consistently had communication issues mostly around food. Some of it is innocent but we had a couple run-ins involving food allergies and we had to be really careful. Daughter asked for honey mustard dressing for her salad and after 3 attempts, they brought out yellow mustard. NO big deal but again, over the course of a week it adds up and we ended up asking certain staff to translate for us so our requests were understood. - Rooms - small things kept us from this being a 5 star resort. We were staying as a family of 5 (king bed, 2 bunks and pullout couch out the entire week) and they only left us 4 bath towels. EVERY day. 4 towels. I called housekeeping for more, left notes for our housekeeper with cash asking for more towels. And every day. 4 towels. We did also call twice because the hottest our shower ever got was lukewarm. After 2 visits from the maintenance staff we gave up. This resort is a solid 4 stars but I think we came in expecting a 5-star experience and this resort fell short of that in several ways. That being said, we LOVED LOVED the kind and sweet employees. Everyone was so gracious and friendly. Anthony and Laura at breakfast were standouts, Paco and Carlos on the golf carts/bell service. What a beautiful property and special place. I think if you go in expecting 4 stars intead of 5, you'll be quite happy with this wonderful resort.

    Fantastic!

The Westin will be a place we will visit again! Beautiful grounds- even better service. Everybody was extremely happy and eager to help when needed- food was fantastic at every restaurant and always felt safe. The rooms were clean and we even got complimentary upgraded to The Club and it was fantastic. I can not say enough good things about our stay. Also Eric G ( guy in the blue Google shirt and hat) is a fantastic entrepreneur who will greet you out on the beach and has wonderful advice about what to do and where to go. Everything we booked through him was great! Then entire vacation was great. We will be back Westin! We will be back Eric G!
