5 star service in a 4.5 star hotel!

We are coming to the end of a 9 night stay at The Secrets Hotel in Puerto Calero and I can honestly say it has been one of the most perfect relaxing holidays we have ever had! Having said that - after 26 years together this was the first adults only hotel we’d been to which probably accounts for the relaxing part (no kids!) however we are fairly regular travellers and I spend many many hours researching where we are going including restaurants and food particularly because myself being vegan with a husband that is essentially veggie with a bit of chicken/ham and bacon - making sure we find somewhere with good and broad food choices is really important to us. Having had a family member come here last year we already knew that it wasn’t going to be dreadful in any way and then researching all the reviews on line including the vegan options we had high hopes - and we have certainly not been disappointed!! This is a round up of what we experienced… 1. The atrival - we were greeted by the fabulous lady porter (sorry I have such a bad memory for names!) who welcomed us with a glass of fizz and once we were checked in she took us to our rooms giving us a very personal service explaining where everything noon the hotel is and which lifts etc were the best to use to get to each area. She even brought me a whole carton of oat milk for my morning tea and 10 extra hangers! I can honestly say that they were falling over themselves to do what they could to make us welcome. 2. The room - we had treated ourselves as it was a special anniversary to the Preferred club All Inclusive Ocean front room - it was very spacious and had everything we needed - very comfy beds and the housekeeping was impeccable - cleaned every day with the mini bar restocked daily too. We had a huge smart TV which bizarrely had BBC ITV and channel 4!?! obviously this isn’t such a big deal for many but perfect if you like to have a little moment of home comfort when you’re having a cuppa in bed in the morning! 3. The food - for us this was a really imperative part of our stay and excellent - being a vegan I am well versed in arriving somewhere and having to explain what a vegan is etc (especially in Spanish beach resorts and Italy where everything is coked in butter!) but there was no problem here. Again being part of the preferred club we were able to have a la carte meals every day. Breakfast in the Portofino restaurant was perfect - there was lots of fruits, soya yogurt, cereals and alternative milks and then you order your breakfast which was an array of possibilities including avocado mushrooms tomatoes beans and spinach. They also had lots of different breads with jams and a margarine version that was dairy free. What really impressed me was the vegan menu that was available in any of the restaurants - my only criticism of this would be that you couldn’t ask for this at lunchtime only at dinner however this didn’t cause any problems as all the restaurants had a few vegan options and you can easily ask them to adapt things - I’m one for my avocado so just asked for the shrimp and avo salad with no shrimp or pink sauce and the patatas bravas with the alioli on the side (for hubby to have!) Dinner was excellent! I had many different choices and indulged in meals such as vegan lasagne, spaghetti pomodoro, Thai green curry, mushroom risotto and a veggie burger. Everything is really well labelled for allergens as well so you can feel pretty safe in knowing that things are dairy/fish/meat and egg free. On one occasion we did go to the World Cafe which is the buffet restaurant for I presume all inclusive guests? Am not sure, however again fairly pleasantly surprised as they they had cooking stations on in the evening one of whom was cooking fresh stir fry in front of you so again could easily ask for a veggie stir fry with various veg/noodles/rice/spices etc…I’m not one for a pudding but I also had the most gorgeous chocolate brownie with mango sorbet more than once although this was only available in the a la carte restaurants. From my Hubby’s perspective he said that his choices all round were very good too. I have to say that I’m glad we had the a la carte options as I’m not sure I’d have been happy going to restaurants in town or at the buffet restaurant every day and I’m not sure what choices you have as half board so I can’t comment. 3.The pool area - so being in the preferred club we found this incredibly relaxing - plenty of beds round the pool and waiter service on hand for whatever drinks you want - again as part of the preferred club there was no question about what you could and couldn’t have apart from the more expensive brands that you would need to pay a supplement for but I’m talking your Hendricks gin and champagne etc... 4.Other aspects - the entertainment every night was ok - nothing spectacular but something to watch for an hour in the evenings. Cleanliness - was excellent! Everywhere was impeccably clean so absolutely no concerns there! Finally what gives this hotel its 5 stars from us is 100% the hospitality! Every single member of staff that we came in contact with was welcoming and happy and genuinely there to do everything they can for you. From the porters to the cleaners, the bar and the restaurant staff they were all fantastic! There are of course always things that can be improved and to be fair although this hotel is 5 stars I don’t think it is quite there yet from an English perspective. A couple of areas such as the loos near the pool needed a bit of attention (loose door handles) and the odd area in our room that maybe needed a touch up of paint. The menus were a little grubby and being extremely picky - the products in the bathroom were not of a very high standard. But that is being extremely critical. All in all this holiday has done exactly what it says on the tin for us!! We have relaxed, eaten (too much) & drunk (also too much!) and had the most wonderful time together. I would personally say if you’re going then push the boat out and do the all inclusive club preferred option - I promise you won’t be disappointed! We will be back again and next time we may even go the whole hog and book a swim up room! Now that really would be a treat!

An upmarket hotel in an upmarket resort

This is an upmarket hotel and resort. It takes about 20 mins to walk along a nice prom from the hotel to the marina. The resort has a few upmarket small shops. The hotel is beautiful, spacious and clean. Well appointed and comfortable bedrooms. Food is lovely, especially in the a la carte restaurants. Staff are hardworking, polite and friendly but we felt there were not enough staff and the hotel was not full. Pool area was spacious and plenty of comfortable sun beds. There was room to move the sun beds around in the sun and shade. The pool was freezing so you couldn’t stay in long. The entertainment was very good, even the flamenco which we don’t usually like. They did insist on the dress code in some restaurants which I liked.

Pleasant stay but not exceptional, not 5*

Pleasant stay but not a 5* experience. Big shout out to Isabel for Yoga and Pilates, she was excellent. Did not like the class system of 'preferred' which was an addition €1200 for our stay to benefit of an additional pool and some premium liqour and a different option lunch/breakfast. Not worth it IMO. Although the swim up rooms did look very nice. I expect a 5* experience throughout the hotel and felt the preferred barely merit a 5* and the rest borderline 4*.

    Excellent

Everyone at this hotel is so friendly and I have really enjoyed my stay here. The room was comfortable, clean and the service was amazing. The atmosphere was quiet, which is perfect for me. I loved it here so much that I’ve booked to come again next year.
