Good, but misses wow factor due to food options
I have mixed feelings about this resort, which is why the 3-star rating. We were with a group of friends and had an amazing vacation over Christmas 2024. This resort itself is okay. Nice, well kept, and they do a great job keeping rooms, pools, common areas and especially washrooms clean. They are also very responsive when one reports messes. The Activities team did a great job keeping guests engaged with yoga, foam pool parties, and so on. It was a lot of fun. The staff are courteous and the bartenders will mix drinks well for you. The infinity pool with mezcal bar was crowded, but our favorite place to hangout after other activities. Also, big plus that lounge chairs by the pool or by the beach are always available! They have a lot, and one doesnt have to scramble early in the morning to find a place. Our kids also enjoyed a lot in the pools, beach and the 24hr sports bar. Riu Jalisco is also walkable from this resort and we went there to the disc; and that was a lot of fun. (However, on our second visit to the disc, there was no one there and there was a strong odor of vomit - so some guests seem to have partied a little too much). There is lively daily shows and music performances in the evenings/night with dancing that livens up the atmosphere. Overall, guests are going to have an amazing time with their loved ones. So why 3 stars then? The food. I’ll put a caveat here and say that while the food did not sit too well with us, I can see that some other groups who have a lot of beef, pork and fish eating population could see it differently. In our group, we had 3-4 vegetarians, and the rest savor chicken and fish more than pork, and we dont eat beef. So while their main restaurant, Don Rafael, indeed has a lot of variety; the food is bland, and after two-three days it gets very repetitive and boring. So much so that our vegetarian folks opted for salad and fruits in most meals in the last few days. We also found that food was rotated between Il Gusto, Nirvana and Don Rafael. That multiplied our food boredom. Nirvana does have great offerings and we ate there the most after Don Rafael. If Riu Vallarta can spice up their food and restaurant offerings, maybe add one or two more restaurants with more variety of food; and add a beach bar/stall so we dont have to go all the way back up the stairs to get drinks when lounging at the beach, this will become a better resort; and deliver that final wow factor that is currently missing.

Riu Vallarta is great value for your money.
The Riu Vallarta is a very nice resort. Clean, great food and great service. Very busy when we were there, the Staff work very hard to please. The beach is beautiful with Palm tress for shade. Lots of vendors who can be persistent. Great outdoor courtyard and lounge. Entertainment some nights was very good. Would like to see more live music and nit for just an hour and 1/2. All in all great value.

RIU Puerto Vallarta Mexico
Excellent holiday. Staff and fellow holidayers were so friendly. Staff was constantly cleaning to keep it looking good. The buffet and restaurants offered a wide variety to please everyone. There was always something going on or you could just chill by the pools in sun or shade. There happened to be some bug bites from tiny no seeums. Should have brought repellent. An evening excursion by boat to Rhythm of the Night was an excellent choice. All in all I would highly recommend a RIU Hotel holiday.

Riu Vallarta Was Excellent (Sunwing Not So Much)
Spent 6 lovely days at Riu Vallarta (not 7; Sunwing incompetence). This Riu resort checked off all of the boxes. Our room with partial ocean view was lovely. Every staff member is to be commended for their politeness, professionalism, and their work ethic. The cleanliness of the entire facility was maintained 24 hours a day. All 4 a la carte restaurants were excellent as was the main buffet. Well done Riu!! So half of our luggage did not make the direct flight with us (more Sunwing incompetence) and each day I would ask Riu staff if anything had arrived. Every staff member felt genuinely sad for us and checked thoroughly each and every time I asked. Sunwing on the other hand, outright lied to us, because the visa debit card they provided never did get any money loaded onto it causing us great embarrassment each time we tried to use it. Congratulations Riu on holding up your end of delivering what a vacation should be. Bravo Riu!! Please invite Stephen Hunter (CEO of Sunwing) down for a visit so he can learn how to treat customers right. Everyone who lost a day of vacation due to Sunwing incompetence should be compensated. Shame on you, Stephen Hunter and Sunwing.
