Overall, great Stay at RIU Palace Macao
Everything was great at this RIU. Food was really good overall. El Patio buffet was plenty and fresh. Eats after hours was not great (sort of left over hamburgers/hotdogs at the Sports Bar). So, don't plan to eat late night unless you order room service. The restaurants were all fantastic except for Kabuki. At Kabuki, the food came out in stages, so you never knew when you were getting what. And depending what you ordered, you could be finished before the rest of your party started. Steakhouse and Krystal were great. Volare was good. We found the best time to go was about 6:15 as there was no wait. We went at about 7:00 one night and had a 45 minute wait (not a big deal though, they give you a buzzer thingy, so we went to get a drink and returned when it went off). Drinks were good, lots of variety (beer variety was only at the sports bar and they were out sometimes). Used the app to request certain drinks in our fridge/mini bar. They quickly accommodated us. Swim up bar was great, but got busy at times with partiers (our type at times). We spend some time in that pool and the main pool floating around. Never a shortage of waiters asking if you needed a drink. Beach was great, swam a couple times in the ocean. No seaweed (or very little). Great, sandy beach, not crowded at all. Lots of tress leading to the beach, so you can lounge in the shade if you want as well. No problems finding loungers at the beach either. A couple vendors selling things, but a quick ask and a no thanks and they were on their way. Way different than our experiences in Mexico. We walked the boardwalk along the beach to other RUI resorts, had lunch there. It was good. Nice stroll. There are some additional shops at the end of the boardwalk as well. The room was good. We didn't look over the pool (we looked the other way and were on the side by El Patio). Everything seemed close to our room (but never loud). Our deck/patio was great. Large enough for a couple people to sit out there. A rack for drying swim suits, etc. was appreciated. Only negative about the room was is was VERY damp due to the humidity. So damp, that the sheets felt wet when going to bed. A/C, TV, fridge, shower, everything worked as expected. Overall, a great stay and I'd recommend this resort.

Great Resort for a Relaxing Getaway
I've been to Riu Palace Macao a number of times and this was the first since the renovations. Really like what they did to the rooms, restaurants and entrance. I am not a big buffet lover, however I have always thought RiU Palace's buffet was better than most. Not this time. I found the food to be bland and ok. The buffet area is a lot smaller than it used to be so now there is less choice and dry for the most part.

If you are after pure luxury, this isn’t the hotel for you
I’d recommend this hotel depending on who you are and what you want out of your holiday. Would I go back? No So our holiday started off bad as when we got to this hotel, there was no one there to welcome us, no welcome drink or anything. We went to reception and they started off by scamming us. We couldn’t believe it. We booked a pool view room and I asked if they had sea view available. They said they can upgrade us for $150. We said yes as that’s great. Then they said cash only. Obviously now alarm bells rang. She showed us where our original room was vs the upgrade on the map. The upgrade was pool view and our original was car park view??? I said this is wrong, we booked pool view. She said there’s none available in the ‘block’ we apparently booked, so it’s either car park view or pay. Basically this woman tried to make us pay for a room upgrade that we already paid for, cash only of course so they can pocket the money themselves. We said no and we will have to speak to a TUI rep tomorrow. Suddenly now a pool view room is available and was given this. The view was awful though, I’ll insert a picture of our original and next room, the room was damp and smelt bad. The TUI rep the next day sorted our new room out for us, this was much nicer. I recommend you asking for a high room. I will add you can’t book sea view unless you are elite club, however pool view you can also see the beach especially on a higher floor. This gave us a sour taste in our mouth now. Bear in mind we are both here for our birthday so we wanted it to be extra special yet we felt we was being scammed as soon as we walked into the place. Next thing is you can’t book restaurants which is so annoying. Yes we always had to wait for a table minimum 30 mins. Especially at the Asian. We didn’t try the fusion but the other restaurants are really good, favourite was Asian, I was really impressed by this, and the food at the buffet was excellent, EXCEPT for breakfast I thought was awful if you like the English or American breakfast. I ended up skipping breakfast most mornings. Now, I’m going to be honest. This hotel is full of people 50+. Me and my friend in our 20s were constantly being stared at as we were pretty much the only young people there. I think we saw maybe 6 others the whole time. This also meant the entertainment was focused towards the older generations. There’s riu party’s multiple times a week though which are a 2 minute walk away which are great. We wanted to chill in the day anyway but if you want more lively and party in the day this isn’t for you. I’ll be honest the staff aren’t great at all, not very friendly or accommodating. I don’t know if this is a thing in DR as I have been here a few times but this hotel was another level. we noticed you go up to order and they just stare at you, they don’t say hi what would you like or anything and it was just strange. Beds at the pool early in the morning, no one is there, yet they all have a towel. Felt like I was in Benidorm I was disappointed with this hotel as reviews show it’s an amazing hotel that couldn’t be faulted, I couldn’t disagree more. We had a good time in DR though as we had either a Riu party or an excursion daily, if you are considering buggies or saona do them, both great. I also went to the spa on my birthday and had a massage, it wasn’t a good massage at all. And all the facilities were closed. It was $110 so wasn’t cheap. That was disappointing. They didn’t say happy birthday either, I must say the hotel didn’t do much to make my day special, however I did get a note and some balloons in the room when I got back at the end of the day which was nice. I do stay in hotels a lot with work so maybe I am more hard to please than your average person, but if you are after luxury and you travel a lot, don’t visit. If you aren’t too bothered and are usually happy with a Riu hotel, you’ll probably like it. However as we had 2 rooms and one smelt bad and the view was awful there’s clearly inconsistency with the rooms so be sure to ask to move if you aren’t happy.
