Riu Emerald Bay - 1st time to Mazatlan

Travelled here in January 2025 with another family (4 adults, 4 kids all together). Our families stayed in the new section of the hotel in a one-bedroom suite. Pros: - Amazing beach, can walk for a long time, except the majority of the beach is crushed shells, as opposed to nice walking sand. - We enjoyed our room and having a separate room away from the kids. Girls got their own beds as well. - Asian (Bamboo) & Italian restaurant (Las Gaviotas) for supper were the best meals we had all 7 days we ate at the resort. We were able to get a 2nd reservation for Bamboo because it was so good. - Grounds of resort were well kept and very nice - Amazing sunsets - Restaurant closest to new section open for breakfast was great with lots of selection. - Lunch buffet at the other end of the resort - Las Gaviotas (same restaurant as Italian in the evening) was a good option. Often we would come here and get lunch and take it to the pool. Salad with chicken or we would make fish tacos at this buffet. They also served churros at lunch and soft serve ice cream, which the kids enjoyed. Cons: - Not resorts fault, but it was cold at night time - very happy I packed sweaters and pants - this is the first time I have needed these on a hot holiday. We are from Canada so we are used to -50 weather in the winter. - Night time entertainment was lacking and not very entertaining. - The main buffet opened for supper and the only option for supper if you did not get a restaurant reservation, was awful. Towards the end of the week, none of our families wanted to eat there. In addition, watching the cooks use their hands to handle the meat was very undesirable. - Tabasco - Mexican restaurant - we personally did not eat here but the other family that we travelled with did, and they said it was awful. - The kids did not utilize the waterpark other than one day as they complained the slides hurt going down. - Pepe's Food - one child from each family got ill - the only thing they both ate that no one else did was the hot dogs. After watching the cooks using their hands constantly to handle the food, and the food sitting in the trays for hours, we did not eat at this snack bar for the remainder of the trip and chose to go inside to the lunch buffet and bring food outside to the pool. We did the aquarium and red truck tour for excursions. Both were very enjoyable and we would do both again! One thing to mention, once you entered the aquarium, the time share representatives were inside the gates waiting for you. I did not see any at the Riu. I just found it odd that they were inside the gates of the aquarium. Overall, would we go back? If we were to return to Mazatlan, we likely would given the room we had, the amazing beach, the nice resort grounds, and the excursions we did. The food could be improved drastically for the supper buffet and the night time entertainment could definitely be better.

    Couple from Calgary L&J

For us first time in Mazatlán we where very pleasant surprise how resort was organized! Room was nice little outdated so maybe next time we would prefeed new side of the resort because bathroom need upgrades in tower buildings for sure. Food was delicious in buffed every day. Complained only we would have is organizing la carte restaurants booking!! That should be done for people more easy way (like in other RIU we stay) just walk in or be able to book in advance specially if we stay two weeks. Resort was very clean and staff always kind and friendly. Pools were cold but still nice and clean. Tons of Tanning beds outside and that was nice so no getting up at 6am to get tanning beds like some another resorts.. Maybe gym need little upgrade, but steam room and whirlpool was nice touch for us. We would be glad to come back maybe later in the season, because tour for snorkeling would be nice to have warmer ocean. Half of the day trip with Vista Tour was nice also great just small group of people What we did missing was opportunity to have bicycles in the resort specially if is fantastic path way just outside of the resort for miles! Anyway thank you all staff for good time we did have in your resort and maybe we will be back for our anniversary next year. Till next time take care, Lenka from Calgary
