The absolute best vacation we’ve had!

Our family of 6 stayed in 3 bedroom ocean view (room 604) in the Hokulani tower during Easter break week. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was first class, the grounds and buildings beautiful, the pools perfect for the kids, and the beach top notch. I couldn’t say enough good things- it couldn’t have been nicer. There were a lot of people but it never felt crowded (though I grew up on the Jersey shore so my definition of feeling crowded may be different than others). I chose this resort because it was the only place I could find that offered 3 bedrooms with a kitchen, by the ocean and with “resort” pools. Based on my past experience in Maui I wasn’t expecting much from the beach area so I wanted a fun pool area to keep little kids entertained. The kids lived the pools ithe first day and then never went back because they loved the beach so much. Enough sand and the fun of snorkeling. The ocean view in 604 was tremendous- I could see down the beach, though I could see how someone paying a premium for an “ocean front” 1 or 2 bedroom could be disappointed as those rooms are set back farther from the water. This is a VERY family oriented resort- I’ve never noticed a place where fathers were so present lol. I’m sure some will be interested in the state of Lahaina 2 years after the fires as I was- I can’t pretend to know the first thing about what’s going on except that FEMA housing is still quite presemt, and the progress of the rebuild for the homes of the people who keep the resorts running would be considered unacceptable by mainland standards. You’d think the wealth behind the thriving resorts would help out those communities to be farther than it is, but unfortunately that’s doesn’t seem to be the reality.

    Would stay here again

Excellent location and super clean units. There are various pools to keep kids occupied and the beach just feet away. We were lucky enough to be able to spot whales while having breakfast outside. Another bonus is being able to just sit walk to Dukes to grab a bite, or have it brought to you while sitting poolside

Fatal flaw in an otherwise terrific resort

My family and I just spent a week at Honua Kai and the resort itself is beautiful and our unit was also terrific. The pools were also very nice, and they were in fact the main reason for us to choose Honua Kai. This is our 8th trip to Maui and with our child's main ask being a big nice pool, we stayed at Honua Kai. The big flaw at Honua Kai, which ruined our stay, and will keep us from ever coming back is this; Honua Kai doesn't care about the enjoyment or safety of its guests. Every single day, the pool is full of grown men and teenagers throwing footballs as hard and other kinds of balls at each other, often hitting the other guests, and Honua Kai doesn't care. After my young daughter got hit with a football, I went to the front desk and asked if throwing balls was allowed. She said no, and she would call security to get people to stop. No one came. I went back and they said someone came and didn't see anything, which was a lie. I was there watching security. She said she would send someone else, and this time, someone came and told the people to stop. Next day, same story. But this time, I went to the front desk 3 times and no one came. So out of 5 requests, they came once. All in all, we had to relegate ourselves to a small corner of one of the pools as you couldn't swim like we wanted to, my daughter got hit in the face 3 times, and I saw a baby get hit (mother was furious), many small children almost get hit, a woman get hit in the face by a football and it knocked her glasses off. If throwing balls is not allowed as security and the front desk told me, why isn't there a sign to stop it? People are getting hit every day, families with small children can't use the pools because these people are throwing these balls (including actual footballs) as hard as they can, they block half of the pool, and make the pool unusable for everyone else. And if if throwing balls is not allowed, why doesn't security do walkthroughs and stop people throwing balls. If you have young children and don't want them smashed in the face with a ball, don't go to Honua Kai. If you want to swim comfortably without having to constantly look out for grown men and teenagers throwing balls at you, stay away from Honua Kai. Its an absolute shame as the resort itself is great, but it is clearly very poorly managed as they do not care about the safety and comfort of their guests. Every time we've been to Maui, we've had a great time, from Elua Village, Grand Champions, The Palms. We've never had any issues like this. Wish we would have known in advance that the beautiful pools in the pictures are made absolutely unusable because the staff won't follow their own rules, they won't post signs not to throw balls, and no matter how many babies and small children get hit in the face with balls, it doesn't seem to matter to the management Honua Kai. My advice - until they address this obvious (and simple to fix) issue, avoid this place

    Excellent family location

The Honua Kai was excellent, along with the service by Claudine and team. Our kids loved the pools and we experienced the best snorkelling on Maui down the beach towards Black Rock. Our boys are 9 and 12 years old. Recommend the Hula Pie dessert at Dukes restaurant.

    Excellent Maui resort

Outrigger Honua Kai exceeded our expectations. We typically get ocean view rooms but this time we had a mountain/resort view 2 bedroom jr suite. It was definitely not bad. We got groceries across the street at times grocery store and cooked breakfast and lunch saving us quite a bit of $$ on our trip. The resort was beautiful and very clean, I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again! We ate at Dukes a few times, it was excellent and nice to have it right on site. Reservations early are a must otherwise you’ll be waiting a good hour in queue for dinner. There is also a food truck park within walking distance as a dinner option.
