Great trip and a comparison to Allegro

Exceeded expectations and may be a perfect fit for you and your family. All Inclusives all have their pluses and minuses in Cozumel, but I think Occidental has a lot to offer folks. We visited Allegro the year before and enjoyed it as well. Here is how I would compare the two - Rooms/Grounds: Occidental wins for us, it is much more a part of the jungle, whereas (and some of this is likely due to a fire a few years ago) Allegro is very open and you feel like you're at a large resort. The rooms at Occidental are far larger, the bathrooms as well and I think better equipped. Each facility is very clean and the grounds well taken care of. Food: Occidental wins for us again. I did overhear another guest saying "the food is much better this year". Indicating they've been there previously and the food has improved. Since Allegro is a sister resort to Occidental, it is very possible the food has improved there as well. But for us, compared to Allegro a year ago, Occidentals food was better. At all restaurants you had food that was hot, at Allegro the year before there was almost never anything hot, it was lukewarm. The beer at Occidental is cans of Modelo at the bars that are sitting in ice. So, the beer is ice-cold. At Allegro, often it was tap Dos Equis in a plastic cup and far from ice-cold. Beach: Allegro wins here, the erosion of the Occidental beach is a problem, they have a small beach off to the north side of the pool and it is good, but Allegro has a much more expansive beach area as well as beach volleyball net. Both have good snorkeling right off their beach. This year we saw rays, starfish, barracuda and tons of other fish in a single snorkel outing. Allegro was similar in snorkeling. Pool(s): We spent all our time at the activity pool, didn't have Level access and were with kids so didn't spend much time at the adult only pool. The activity pool is nice, has some differing areas for those who just want to dip feet or legs, while the main deeper portion is a nice size and almost never felt crowded minus Sunday when it seemed a cruise group was allowed a day pass. Allegro may win this one as they have a swim up bar, the activity crew was a bit more lively, though Jesus did a great job at Occidental with the kids programs and made some memories some kids in our group. Staff: Probably a tie here. Having been to 6 different Cozumel resorts in the past, all the folks at all the resorts have been great and Occidental is more of the same. Carla working by the pool as a waitress was phenomenal and such a sweetheart. Jesus as previously mentioned was a great guy and had fun activities for the kids. The bartenders were all kind and quick, the wait staff was all great as well as the front desk folks. Overall: I think it comes down to what you want from a resort. If you like larger rooms, more a part of nature feel, smaller, better food (compared to last year), colder beer, I think Occidental wins. If you want more of a beach, a swim up bar, a water park, a bit more adult activities by the pool and a hibachi restaurant, you would likely prefer Allegro. In the end we loved our stay at Occidental, it is right up there with Iberostar as our favorite resort in Cozumel. Thanks to all the staff for making our stay great, we'll likely be back.

    Beautiful Resort

Very relaxing atmosphere, the grounds are beautiful and staff was excellent. Only drawback was not enough music during the day by the pool by the beach, when they did play it you couldn’t here it. Need speakers around the pool

    Exceeded expectations

Previous reviews were all over the place. We found the resort to be up to date, extremely clean, staff is friendly and helpful, many amenities (scuba on site, conceirge arranged mopeds for daily excursion and recommended great areas to visit outside the resort). Felt very safe and cared for. We will be back!

    Beautiful Cozumel setting

Lush green setting, my wife who is a veteran travel agent and l were not disappointed in all aspects. Excellent and friendly staff kept property, rooms , restaurants clean, presentable. Specialty restaurants pleasant surprise and buffet always had a wide variety of things people expect plus many local dishes. Never had a bad meal or service. Staff are quick and ready to help the buffet run well. Bedrooms spotless, note plumbing taps hot/cold work opposite Canada/ US configuration ( blue hot). If you have ground floor watch out that Coati animals can open sliding screen door and steal food left out.. just close glass door...they not nocturnal but day time bandits like raccoons at night). Beach area is down a mangrove boardwalk. Here too are the main pool and Beach restaurant plus a Dive shop. Lots of visitors at this resort are here to dive or snorkel. Lots of boats coming and going. Beach property is narrow but beach offers long walks off property. We had a problem last day not finding loungers. Like many ,this resort has many guests staking their spots with their towels early in day. Most days enough for all but you are tightly packed in. We enjoyed the beach and adult pool every day. Very easy going clientele while we were here. A friendly place. Lots of Canadians from all over the country, Americans, Mexicans and other Spanish speakers too. Very much a family place. Not a boisterous, hard drinking crowd compared to other resorts we've encountered over the years. We felt this resort offered a relaxing and pleasant place to just soak up the sun, swim, get 3 good meals every day without having to think too much or extend any effort. We think we will return. We paid full price and it was very reasonable. Other patrons seemed happy and satisfied too. The Air Canada Vacations transfers, service and Cozumel airport work fine. Going to Negril next month but l think we will return here in 2026. We'd recommend. Bring either Cdn, or US currency to tip the hard working local staff who appreciate recognition for their efforts to make your stay a happy one.
