Give yourself the gift of staying in Hana
My Dad grew up in Hawaii and as kids we attempted the road to Hana but didn't make it very far due to motion sickness. We also weren't planning to stay so needed to retrace our steps the same day. This year we found ourselves with some extra time on Maui and decided to attempt the road. I booked two nights at the Hana-Maui Resort and wow I could have stayed an entire week! We managed the road just fine (two kids, we all took Zofran). We downloaded the Shaka Guide and stopped at various places of interest - I highly recommend the guide as they give you great info and heads up as you're approaching various things (incl restrooms). We booked an ocean-view Bungalow (with points) and both my kids exclaimed it's like a very fancy summer camp. These stunning bungalows overlook the pounding ocean... a swimming pool close by. The rooms seemed very large compared to other hotels we've stayed at. As always in Hawaii, there are tiny ants so do not leave any food out on counters. We used the refrigerator in our room to store snacks. Food trucks are a great option for dining. Check out Hasegawa market and it's storied history. Both mornings we were first to the Hamoa Beach, with chairs, towels and umbrella from hotel valet. I kept pinching myself asking if this could possibly be real. Both nights we sat in the Adirondack chairs overlooking the ocean reading our books. Memories to last a lifetime. Black sand beach was also a highlight - be sure and book your ticket in advance. Mahalo Hana-Maui Resort!

Wonderful experience!
So amazing and relaxing. Staff was wonderful! They helped us know if it was safe to have our luggage in the car when we left to hike at some waterfalls. Also suggested some good food. They had chairs down by the beach so we could listen to the waves at night.

Not what I expected
I have to say, I was extremely let down by the condition of the room. It was absolutely filthy—there were bugs, rust, mold, and the safe wasn’t even bolted down. This is not what anyone would expect from a $1,000-a-night hotel room. I get that hotels age, but that’s no excuse for the level of neglect and dirt I encountered. Cleanliness isn’t about age—it’s about basic standards, which were clearly not met here. I have numerous photos and videos that show just how bad it really was. Honestly, you should be ashamed of the state of that place. At best, I’d say the room was worth maybe $300 a night, and even that feels generous. I imagine most guests are misled by the beautiful view, which I admit was lovely—but again, what does that have to do with the room being dirty and neglected? And then there's the way my complaint was handled. First, I received what I can only describe as a passive-aggressive, dismissive response from the manager—something that felt like a clear "screw you" message. All in all, this experience was deeply disappointing, and far from what I expected given the price and reputation of the property.

A wonderful quiet paradise
We got a warm welcome, were escorted to our rooms and the pool. The hotel garden is a wonderful green paradise with lots of plants. Hotel rooms are quite big, with a terrasse to sit outside, with shower and bathtub and a small kitchen corner. Just perfect. Could be a little cleaner, but was completely ok. We enjoyed the stay here much more than in the beach hotels on Maui. If we had known, we would have stayed longer in this tranquil paradise...
