Good times at the Grand Princess Riviera

Our family of five spent a week at this resort and enjoyed our stay. There were some minor niggles, that cost the review a star but overall we would happily go back. The Good The resort looks impressive. The wild life was cool (monkeys, coati, deer, iguanas, a raccoon) The food at the buffets was good, you could always find something you liked. The taco stand by one of the pools was good. The gym was pretty good. Good variety of equipment, though some were out of service. Our room was very nice. The bed was comfortable and the shower was good. The pools and the beach were good. Most of the drinks were tasty and reasonably strong. I favoured the lime margaritas on the rocks. My wife and daughter really enjoyed the mango margaritas. The Niggles Housekeeping was inconsistent. On one or two occasions, towels weren’t replaced or the mini bar wasn’t restocked. A call to reception did get these fixed quickly. Sort of tied to the above, the “Do Not Disturb/Please Make Up the Room” sign fell off our door handle really easily, which meant that it was ineffective at times. I found the poolside pina coladas to be bland. The pina colada I had at the specialty restaurant was much better.

    We cannot wait to return

My daughter and I spent 8 days at Grand Riviera Princess in December 2024. Prior to booking, we had some reservations due to having read some of the critical reviews. To our pleasant surprise, our experience was 100% positive and none of the concerns expressed by previous guests came true. First of all, the resort is absolutely beautiful, with very tall palm trees and lots of water fountains, and it is very well maintained by the constantly hardworking staff. The fact that is large is, actually, a bonus since it offers the chance to walk and exercise after meals and in between. There are, also, trolleys which run back and forth, between the beach and the lobby. Wildlife is plentiful and wonderful to experience: from exotic birds, coati and iguanas, to monkeys and even deer. Our room was clean and quiet, with the most comfortable bed. Just steps from the beach and by the Snack Bar, one of the buffets where we had breakfast and lunch. The minifridge was stocked daily. For dinner we went to the bigger buffets in the main plaza and we always found delicious food among the impressive amount of choices. We tried two of the a la carte restaurants, as well as tacos by the pool and burgers on the beach. The evening shows were very professional. We saw the Mexican Show, Michael Jackson, Grease, The Nutcracker, Fire Show, etc. The beach is long and with lots of beach loungers. If you are a swimmer, unfortunately, the water is very shallow and there are rocks in certain areas, so it is difficult to swim. However, the swimming pools make up for it and there are plenty to choose from, each with its own vibe. They are very clean and bar service is, also, provided. We visited Playa del Carmen a couple of times since it is so close by. All in all we had a memorable vacation and we cannot wait to, one day, return.

    Great relaxing vacation

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our 11 day stay at Grand Riviera Platinum Princess Resort. The staff were friendly, helpful and very hard working. We had breakfast daily at the Snack Riviera Buffet. Our server Lorenzo was great! He remembered what we liked to drink and was friendly and attentive to us each day. The staff at the beach bar serving drinks were awesome as well! Lorena, Israel and ‘Super Mario’. Our room was promptly and thoroughly cleaned daily with extra little touches to make it special. The concierge and bar staff at the Platinum Lobby were friendly, informative and helped us enjoy a relaxing and memorable vacation. We went to most of the A la carte restaurants - Mama Mia, La Hacienda, La Vaqueria, Miso (teppanyaki), Miso (sushi) and La Fleur. I liked them all, but I was not a fan of the sushi. I usually used the app to book the a la carte restaurants and it worked well with no issues. We took a sea kayak and hobie sailboat out and had a great time. Looking forward to our next visit!

    AVOID

My family, friends and myself stayed at the the princess (not grand by any stretch of the imagination) from the 16th to the 26th of December having stayed at a sister hotel in Jamaica last year and having an amazing time. Can I also add that we have holidayed in Mexico on 4 previous occasions and loved every minute. After being delayed on the way out from Gatwick we finally and excitedly arrived at The Princess. This excitement lasted all of 30 minutes. Firstly the so called meet and greet after a long journey was forgotten, refreshing cold drinks arriving during check in rather than as you get of the coach, no cold flannels here. We then started to check in after 20 hours on the go with children. Once checked in we were taken to our rooms which I can only describe as soulless, mouldy, dirty and 2 star at best. There was what looked like either blood or excrement on the head board and no quilt on the bed, just a sheet (5 star). After an exhausting journey we just wanted to sleep but went back to reception to let them know the situation. We was told There is nothing they could do as they were at capacity . They pointed out that they were expecting further guests (this was at 10pm) so we suggested that we were given their rooms which would give them time to sort out the issues before they arrived and also stating this shouldn't be a problem as they had given them to us stating the rooms are perfectly fine but they declined saying they that this is what had paid for (I do t ever remember going into TUI and asking for a dirty, smelly, mouldy, damp room and asking to be charged 13k for the luxury). We even offered to pay to upgrade and was told no. I pointed out that one of my friends travelling with us had a heart condition and couldn’t be expected to breath toxic mould spores but was laughed at. The names of the front of house staff are as follows … Alexa (so called front of house manager), Avinho (exceptionally rude and aggressive, Eric who appeared to be the muscle and Ortego who stood there laughing at us. We ask for the room to be inspected to which after 20 minutes Alexa said she had done so and the mark on the head rest was paint. Firstly how could you possible know what this was unless it was tested and secondly this room has not seen fresh paint in years. We then said it is not safe for our health to stay in the room due to mould and as they was not prepared to give us another room we had no choice but to sleep in reception to which Alexa said okay not a problem (Alexa then decided to hide out the back and refused to help in any way shape or form). Can I add that the waiting staff and maids (Angel) work tirelessly and couldn’t do enough for you. Also the food was okay but sometimes cold. I feel our holiday was ruined from the off due to well below par untrained, rude staff. We paid almost 13k for this trip but may as well have paid 3k as we would have got a better service elsewhere. Please, please, please do not stay here and believe other negative reviews. We have now been put off ever returning to Mexico again which is a shame. PS I have noticed after looking at other reviews that the response from the hotel is pretty much word for word the same, completely ignoring the issues and saying they will work on correcting. These reviews have been posted for many months and the answer is the same. I really hope the owners of this hotel chain read and action the issues rather than copy and paste nonsensical responses as if not they will only have themselves to blame for business failures moving forward.

    Christmas break

Just returned from 2 weeks in the Riviera and had a great time. 10th time now in Mexico and 3rd Christmas. Biggest Hotel we have ever stayed at. Grounds really beautiful room a bit dated but clean and comfortable with fantastic shower. Hotel very clean and well worth a visit. Food was very good and tried two of the themed restaurants which were also very nice. Staff were nice and friendly and had some nice chats with Margarita whilst she served us our drinks in the evening. Ignore some of these negative reviews sure some of these people just like to pick faults wherever they go
