Through the eyes of a Travel Agent

Booked this trip with Transat Holidays- flight and transfers were usual, Transat rep very informative and always available for their schedule at the hotel. Hotel: beautiful location, lush, well kept gardens,3 pools on the regular side and 2 on the Plus side. 3 Lobbies: Lobby#1 for International clients, Lobby#2 for local and MultiVacaciones clients and Lobby#3 for Plus/Premium clients There's steep stairs taking clients up and down from lobby to pool level-some buildings are down at that level too. There's an amphitheather ( outdoor) with seating on the actual ground. Very small shaded coffee/lobby bar area and some more out in the open with very beautiful view of the ocean. Rooms: had an oceanview room in building 11 -top floor. Clean, spacious with walk in shower. Had a fridge in it and we were given 1 bottle of water/day. Fridge had nothing in it and was not re-filled with anything. There's no iron , ironing board or coffee maker in the room...so your morning starts with excercise: climb the stairs to the lobby for coffee. Buffet restaurant: breakfast -simple and repetitive eggs, processed meats ( 2 kinds at the most) some cheeses, veggies and fruits. Pre made waffels, french toast and pancakes. no real butter( it was some kind of a milk and coconut oil mix -maybe so it would not go bad in the heat?) Lunch and dinner- had the usual rice with beans, coconut rice, pasta, potatoes, a variety of pork, beef and chicken...very rarely seafood. repetitive, it varied a bit but not much. There was a variety of salads, fruits and desert available also, mostly the same every day. A' la carte restaurants :were better, however, for having international ( french, german, canadian and american clients at the hotel I would've expected at least some of the waiters to speak just a little english..in case anyone has a question...but no english was spoken. Dissapointing... Tried Cowboys, Mediteranian and Seafood- they all had flaws but they offered better choices than the buffet. Pools: Spacious and well kept, however they were invaded by locals and colombians with their own music playing, sometimes 2-3 speakers at he same time with different music. There's a waterslide for kids and shallow water pool right beside one of the adult pools also. Ocean and beach: Coarse sand, very hot to step in ocean was murky and wavy and very warm for cooling off. Bars: great offer of a variety of cocktails and other drinks, busy all day, even after dark -I believe they closed up at 8 pm at pool side. Car rental- Budget- Just outside the hotel premises- great price, great vehicles, but I would not go lower in rental than a Toyota Rav4. Driving is not your usual canadian politeness. It's aggressive and they will push you and turn in front of you without any signaling..so not for the faint hearted:)) Roads are much narrower that what we are used to here, so be aware. The Panama Canal is a must see- book a trip at the hotel through your rep! Overall, we had a good trip, saw what we wanted to see, met a few nice people. Thank you to Mariel at Guest Services for the wonderful and detailed hotel Inspection tour. Very knowledgeable and detailed.

    Definitive review of Grand Decameron

My husband and I did not have high expectations of the Grand Decameron after reading TripAdvisor reviews AND we arrived before the rainy season ended but we had sunny days (remember to bring an umbrella for sudden, 20 minute deluges!). The complaints about the distance (1 1/2 hrs.) from Panama City to the resort were written by Americans. From Toronto, we arrived via direct flight on Air Transat to a local airport, 3 - 5 km from the resort. Yay! Re staffers ignoring guests who were not Spanish speakers? For sure, management in ALL the Caribbean Islands, Mexican & Costa Rica resorts that we have stayed at over the years made sure about 50% of their staffers could speak English but if you are friendly, they are friendly and there are great staffers on hand. Ulisses at the Lobby 1 bar was in charge of booking ala carte restaurants. I liked him. He was friendly and helpful, I was 1st in line at 7 AM to book dinner reservations. Not cool that 2 Spanish speakers elbowed next to me at the counter, started speaking in Spanish and he gave them both reservation tickets before he turned to help me! That was not professional and I did not appreciate that. Was it him or the Latinos felt entitled... there was a line-up of English speakers behind me! Friends who traveled here months before warned me about a gal who would only give out 1 dinner reservation at a time (that seemed a ridiculous exercise, to be here for 7 days and have to book every day!) Suppose they fixed that before I arrived as I got 3 nights of dinner reservations (twice). We had a great gal cleaning in our ocean view room. Yes, there are no face cloths (so use a hand towel) and fresh towels often arrived at 5 PM... AFTER we got back from the beach but we made a habit of exchanging our blue beach towels for fresh ones in the afternoon... to use in the shower, then go straight to the pool or beach with them the next morning. The food was fine. You get what you pay for. I did not expect it to be gourmet but I wish the head chef would tell his grill staff to stop overcooking meat, until it was dry and hard at times. Kudos for awesome sauces, great rice & paella dishes tho. Finally. We stayed in Bldg.31 directly across from the fountain. Wish management would turn that fountain off at night. Living in a vast country like Canada, we do not hear the ocean if we are not living at the Pacific or Atlantic coasts. Would have added to our stay to listen to the ocean overnight instead of that inane fountain.

    Must be fit

The Grand Decameron more than met our expectations. We expected a large resort where we could walk on the beach and get our steps and stairs in. We averaged 25,000 steps a day as we developed a routine. There were also several hills to climb to get up to the street level. Your muscles will get a work out!

Grand Decameron ( not so grand)...

Except for the food, I had no major complaints. The food seemed to be (over) cooked by amateurs short order cooks. The buffets, as well as the A La Carte restaurant(s) were serving food which has nothing to do with the title attached to it. There was nothing Asian in the Asian restaurant, wrong names were attached to the wrong food ie, Pork belly was made of beef, Wonton was just fried crust, etc. The fact that this resort has been around for 23 years, should have been enough time to get it to run more efficiently and serve better food, hire professional staff for the kitchen and dining rooms. For any resort, the goal should be for the visitors to leave the resort happy and tell everyone about it.

    Bad choice for our Holidays

Terrible experience with Decameron in Panamá. After 21 years being a member of the all inclusive package in Decameron, having used the first package of Decas with good results, now we are regretting to buythe second package of Decas. Today we came to a swimming Pool in Decameron Farallón and when we arroces for a drink we were denied the Service because we were not registered as “Decameron plus golden “ , which we never heard off. When we tried to make a reservation for four data, they said that our limit of usage per year did not allow it. Our package is ending in 2027 and with the limitation per year, we can not use the Decas we have by 2027. In my view, this is a scam. The food is not what it used to be. Poor quality if meat and poultry hard to cut, límites choices in the buffet and same menú every day. The room had many problems, the air condition did not work, the Security box did not have batteries, etc. In summary. A nightmare Bad investment in summary. In summary a very bad investment
