Not worth the price, but (mostly) excellent employees
As other reviews have mentioned, this resort blocks Tripadvisor on their wifi, so I had to disconnect in order to leave a review here. The pros: most of the staff (especially the groundskeepers, drivers, and servers) are excellent. They are super friendly and great at what they do. Several stand out, but we didn't catch everyone's name. Alex (The Palms), Jonathan (Jade), Samuel (spa), and Julian shuttling us around are all wonderful people. Our concierge downstairs (female, didn't catch her name) is also great and booked our dinner at Fuentes. Food was mostly good, with the exception of La Isla at El Dorado Royale which was terrible food with terrible, mean-spirited service. The cons: the accommodations are pretty bad considering the price here. We booked a standard room with a balcony (higher floor) but were instead put in one of the rooms with a swim-up pool. It might sound like an upgrade, but it's a lower floor, and the pool is pretty much unusable due to how cold it is. We've been here for 5 days now, and I haven't seen a single person using it. Ants have been a regular pest in here. Our neighbors left out their room service for housekeeping to pick up, and it took them over 24 hours to get the dishes, causing a stink and more ants. The room itself has a comfortable bed, but the bathroom needs some updating. The jacuzzi had the drain completely detached when we arrived, and I had to screw it back in to get it working. The shower has a rainwater head above, but the switch to enable it requires an almost impossible amount of strength (so much so that you'll think you're doing something wrong). The drain is also pretty slow in the shower, but it's not a big deal. Other reviews are spot-on about the room needing a refresh. I can't speak to the quality of Bonanza Ranch, but some of the horses didn't seem very happy. Several exhibited signs of stress in their tiny stables (biting the bar and breathing in sharply, over and over again.) Even our tour guide mentioned it was anxiety-induced behavior. Bad: The Lomas travel people. You'll have to go to this office in order to book your "More Inclusive" activities. These people have one of the easiest jobs on the resort, and they act like every waking moment speaking with a guest is painful. The woman who booked our activities on the day we arrived was literally rolling her eyes at basic questions. When our trip to Maroma beach was cancelled, we had to rebook with her, and she clearly couldn't wait to be finished talking with us. My girlfriend got sick one morning, and we couldn't make it for our Aktun Chen excursion, so I waited around for the office to open and tell them we wouldn't be going. When it opened, the man there refused to help, saying I didn't give them enough notice (even though I came as early as we possibly could given the circumstances). He didn't really listen to anything I was saying, and also wouldn't even call the front desk to let the transportation know we weren't coming. I hope they didn't wait around for us, but there's no way of knowing. We got a really good deal for our stay here, but it still feels like we overpaid. I can't imagine paying the normal price. I would look elsewhere. If you insist on staying with this resort family, the Playa Maroma area looks much nicer.

Boring, too laidback. Service, especially at restaurants, not very good.
We were attending a wedding. This resort is so boring, not too many activities in the evening especially. The service was terrible. You order room service, and they take forever (1-2 hours). When the food comes in (we ordered Pizza one night), it was lukewarm. In the restaurants (Palms) food came almost an hour after we ordered. The soup was cold. Coffee in the evening at one of the restaurants took 45 minutes, and then they had to go and get cream and sugar, but did not get the spoon or anything to stir the coffee. Totally laid back atmosphere (in a very negative way), no hurry in attending to customers in restaurants. The actual food in the resort restaurants were okay, nothing great. The staff and everyone working for the resort were friendly. The Chef's Market restaurant had some really great staff (Eduardo, Eddie, Elena), who went over and beyond to help while eating there. But overall, pretty disappointing with the services at the resort. And oh, not their fault, but the weather in December is too cold to swim in the ocean by the beach. Even the many swimming pools were pretty cold.

Lots of screaming kids
I visited Generations shortly after it opened around 10 years ago. My memories of the resort were excellent with top shelf alcohol and exceptional food and service highlighting my previous visit. Things have changed...the resort is beginning to show it's age with poor upkeep and a lack of workmanship with what has been done. Coupled with screaming kids, and and oceanfront that is absolutely littered with the ugliest concrete triangles, it all adds up to a very average experience. After being transferred from the airport by Lomas transport (waited in the van for about 30 mins before leaving airport, grrrr) checkin was quick. Upon arrival, no cool towel, no champagne; just completely lacking the extremely high end feel of when I had previously visited. It's important to note that this used to be a Karisma resort which is no longer the case and it shows. In those days you could pre arrange your preferences from pillows, to linens to scents used in your room. That's all gone as well now. The guest rooms are large and somewhat contemporary but a lot of the wood work has warped and generally deteriorated over time. Little things like towel racks need adjustment, bottom of doors disintegrating, dirty grout in shower, water marks everywhere, mirrors not clean, chrome not shiny .... just overall nowhere near 5 stars. I've stayed in many high end resorts and hotels and know the difference. The TV (2 in my king suite) dangled treacherously from the wall mount and offer a very average selection of channels in stunning STANDARD definition....wow. The one upside is that the rain shower is very good. If the phone rang, I would have to answer it in the bathroom, lol. The desktop set, was constantly updating and acquiring IP address. Speaking of IP addresses, there was no internet connectivity for over a day. When everything is done with the app that's a problem, from concierge, to reservations, requests etc. The first room I was given was on floor one, building 20. I had reserved an Oceanfront View, Swimout. It should be called a Palm Tree View...there was no sign of the ocean anywhere. Needless to say I insisted on being moved...My next room was on the 3rd floor which had a nice view of the Ocean this time. For my entire week's stay there was no possibility for siesta in the afternoon as the guests above me saw fit to allow their children to use the room as a gym; the noise coming from above was unbearable. I ended up spending very little time in my room due to this. The noise emanating from these extremely rude and inconsiderate people ended at around 11 pm EVERY day of my stay. Thankfully guests staying at Generations can enjoy ElDorado Casitas and ElDorado Royale. This is where I spent the majority of my time. Should be noted there are several weddings or events each night. On one morning I was greeted by the most assaulting cacophony of a parade touring the property as it's their custom to do so; in my opinion when you have guests paying thousands of dollars to stay this sort of custom should probably be policed by the hotel to be considerate of all the guests' experience. 9AM is a little early for an obnoxious DJ screaming into the mic over blaring music as a group of 100 plus people are screaming at the top of their lungs, parading alongside guestrooms first thing in the morning. Meals and food ranged from very good to below average. D'Italia, Fuentes (extra cost) and Jade was very good while La Isla, Kicks and other more casual choices were well below average. Even Jade had me sitting there for over 15 mins prior to even filling a water glass let alone taking a drink order. Poolside service was brutal (ElDorado Royale side). Very unfriendly lady serving the entire pool area single handedly so it's understandable why her attitude was sour. After a couple of tries with her, and waiting 30 mins to have her serve others but forget about me, I opted to visit the swimup bar where all the bartenders were tremendous; it should be noted I did reward them accordingly in the form of tips. For the remainder of the trip the bartenders got all my tip money. Bellinis was very quiet with not much atmosphere. The Lobby Bar had an exceptional bartender (Michael) who did a great job of mixing drinks and entertaining everyone at the bartop. The grounds throughout all the properties were very well groomed and cared for. Very beautiful property to walk around and soak up the natural beauty. Many birds, butterflies, geckos, iguanas, Agoti and the cats roam the property freely. Use the Lomas ElDorado app to communicate with your concierge, book restaurant reservations, make requests etc. Overall this is not a property that I'll be returning to. Not great value in my opinion.

Excelente Butlers Jose Cruz and Luiz!
We recently visited Generations and had our usual wonderful and pampered service from our butlers, Jose Cruz and Luiz. Jose was always so upbeat and was smiling no matter what. He would greet us via text each morning (since we like to sleep in!) and tell us our Bali bed was ready when we were. He was ready with his golf cart any time we needed a lift! He was cheerfully ready with any request we had, and followed through with everything. Luiz was wonderful as well. He helped us upon arrival to make preliminary dinner reservations and was always able to make last minute changes when we decided on alternate plans, no matter how impossible the request seemed. He helped to make sure we used our benefits to the fullest and was always ready to take us all over with the golf cart. We enjoyed conversing with both of our butlers and sharing our stories. We were amazed at the excellent English skills they both possessed. Thanks a million to you, Jose and Luiz!! Hope to see you again very soon!

Ask for Luiz and Israel
Best place hands down...Luiz and Israel went beyond to help us on anything. Someone in our large group had gotten an ear infection we askd about pharmacy at resort but they were closed. Luis and Israel left resort to find a local pharmacy for us. Like they went way beyond to help us. Best all around
