Introducing the Big Island’s newest Polynesian Feast
The Fairmont Orchid and Island Breeze Productions announce a partnership that combine the Big Island’s finest cuisine with its most spectacular Polynesian production.
Every Saturday, guests are invited to gather for an evening that begins under the stars dining on culinary treasures from Hawai’i, Tahiti, New Zealand and Samoa on the beautiful grounds of The Fairmont Orchid at Plantation Estates.
Using a fusion of both traditional Polynesian and modern dance choreography, the dancers of Island Breeze retell the story of the settlement of the Pacific. Displayed in its fullness is the mana (power) of the ali’i (chiefs) and how each would be forever linked to the one star that guided them.

awesome, beautiful, enriching
Aloha! This is the place to get close to what we felt was real Hawaii. Clean and very tasteful; well maintained;flowers and Koi ponds set in a golf course with hiking and running trails along the beach; very low tourist pressure. The sunrise canoe with Hawaiian guide was fantastic! Not at all strenuous! Ahi, (our guide) was informative but refreshingly casual. Nice guy that loves what he does. He explained some Hawaiian traditions and the challenges of sustainability in today’s setting. We saw whales breaching, then they came to within 200 feet; you could easily hear their breathes. Beautiful crystal clear warm water with colorful reef fish. Tide pools just north of hotel were fun too. By far my favorite Hawaiian island and hotel.

Decent 4 star experience
For those accustomed to a 5 star experience at Fairmont properties, it's best to adjust expectations down one notch. I've reviewed this place harshly in the past, and am revising my attitude to be much more favorable. It is a decent 4 star experience. The hotel itself, especially the lobby and common areas, is tired and due for a significant upgrade. That said, there is enough of an experience to be had that it's worth a visit if you go with eyes open. Brown's Beach House, Binchotan, Luana Lounge, and Hale Kai restaurants are all quite good, with Hale Kai being the informal option. And Luana Lounge earning coolest light dining/boozing option this trip. The Orchid Court (same space as Binchotan) offers a good breakfast buffet. The grounds are quite pretty if not elaborate, and the ocean views are spectacular. There is a smaller, very protected bay with a beach that is ideal for young kids, though decidedly not for wave jumping or boogie boarding. Watching sunsets from the oceanside chairs is a must. We saw a ton of whales offshore as well. The workout room is big and functional, if a little cluttered. The spa proper is tiny, but the appeal is that treatment rooms are all outside in private huts or at the water. Not bad as long as it's not mowing day. The pool is fine, and includes an adult area. It is nothing compared to the turbo crazy pools at some resorts, but I didn't hear anyone complaining. The nearby "mall," part of the larger Mauna Lani resort area, is pretty depressing. Locals tell us the property management company is to blame. That said, Tommy Bahamas, Foodland, and the Island Hopper Tap Room are exceptions. There is a spectacular walk from the Orchid property along the shore down past the Mauna Lani property, through fish ponds, and down to the Mauna Lani South golf course. You'll need your smart phone or real camera. It makes for a great 4 mile morning down-and-back. We priced the travel independently via internet and also through Costco travel. Costco was BY FAR the best package, including airfare, rental car, hotel accommodation, and breakfast. We'd return as long as the price was right again. The nearby "mall

A great stay...
We had 3 rooms at the Fairmont Orchid towards the end of December. 2 rooms were Garden View and one was Ocean view. We did have a sideway view of the ocean which was beautiful. The rooms are very large and clean, and all of our 3 rooms had balconies. The bathroom is also very spacious; the toilet has a separate door and there is a separate shower and a separate tub with a shower head so 2 people can shower at the same time. The service was very good but not excellent. Breakfast options are buffet or a "deli" where one can pick up coffee and ready to go sandwiches. We tried the Brown Beach House restaurant for a fancy dinner--the view is breathtaking but not the food! The walking pathway both directions is stunning. We ended up walking to the Auberge and having lunch there twice.

Our new favorite Hawaiian resort.
Wonderful stay at this beautiful resort property. The pool is fabulous and is heated to the perfect temperature so you really can enjoy it. Our garden view room could use a few updates, most importantly a dresser is needed to store your clothes. My husband ended up throwing his clothes over the bedside chair. The bathroom is also in need of storage drawers and a better shower. We ended up showering in the tub shower which had a terrific shower head. The beach area is easily accessed with lounge chairs available to use. Snorkeling in the bay is pretty good with a variety of fish to see. The grounds with numerous waterfalls are gorgeous and invite relaxation. All resort staff were friendly and welcoming. There could be another breakfast option added for those not wanting the $50 buffet or deli choices. We spent much of our time relaxing poolside on very comfy lounge chairs with easy access to towels and cold water dispenser for our insulated water bottles provided by the Fairmont. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and are already planning to return next year.

Beautiful relaxing resort.
The resort is beautiful. Checking in the staff was so friendly and helpful. We had a partial ocean view king room in the North building. Our room was clean and comfortable with a large bathroom that had a stand alone shower plus a tub/shower combination. We had a great view of the waterfalls and koi ponds as well as the ocean from our balcony. We enjoyed the large breakfast buffet each morning and quick lunches at the pool on our pool days. The C-BLT is a must have and sharing it is perfect because it’s a large sandwich. We had dinner at Brown’s and I highly recommend the skirt steak! It was delicious. The Luau was fun and the food was very good. We did use the concierge service and they were friendly and helpful. Walk along the waterfront and look for the green sea turtles sunbathing on the shore. The one thing that I felt could use improvement was the elevators in the North building. Only one elevator is working and it at times makes for a wait. I hope that is something that is being worked on. If you plan to leave the hotel you will need a car or plan to use taxi service. There is a small shopping area that the hotel shuttle will drop off and pick you up. Overall we had a great stay. Hawaii is expensive so budget accordingly.
