Bait and Switch 100%
This "resort" is absolutely bait and switch and I'd go as far as to call it a scam. Don't be fooled by their pictures! Pros: 1) great view Cons (unordered): 1) No AC (air conditioning). So you have to keep the windows open 2) loud rooster sounds as early as 2-3am which is made louder since you have to keep windows open not to get hot 3) everything felt old, moldy, or rusty. Things felt like they'd fall apart if I grabbed them. Everything outside the unit was seemingly "painted" at random, and by that it's like someone closed their eyes and threw paint around. Not sure why the stairs had random white streaks or the walls had random discolored blotches. The fan that was available to use looked disgusting, the hair dryer was rusted and potentially moldy. Screen doors had difficulty opening. Lock on door was rusty and gross. 4) not many ceiling lights so rooms felt a bit dark and depressing. 5) bed was hard and extremely uncomfortable. 6) dimly lit resort. Doesn't feel safe to walk around at night. Stray cats are fine, but pigs and random people shambling around the parking lot, especially with how dark it is, made us not want to walk around. 7)) nothing in walking distance except for the ocean, which is not even swimmable due to currents. 8) rude staff. We tried to check out early and get a refund for unused days, but they rudely said manager wasn't there so they couldn't do anything. We asked for a less awful room and without even looking they said nothing was available. We asked for replacement beach towels, which we were told we could do, and when I said I wanted 4 (when they asked the number), the response was "aren't there only 2 of you?" In a clearly annoyed tone. We talked to a few others at this resort and they had similar complaints. We were on our honeymoon and just wanted to enjoy Hawaii and got a miserable resort experience. Stay away at all costs, book anywhere else, you can get so much bang for your buck. I've added several pictures/videos to this review to illustrate my point

Nature at its best. Can be annoying.
Location. Location. Location. #309 Here in Oct. Full balcony ocean front. Just across pool. Well appointed. Needed nothing. Had beach chairs, boogey board for beach. Bring ear plugs and expect to be awaken during night from stupid (other than sunrise) roosters crowing. Though we appre iated being awake at sunrise to watch magnificence appear. Magical. Kauai is nature. Nature is 24hrs. Get away from human time and enjoy. Take a nap. No AC. Good tradewinds.

WORST PLACE I’VE EVER STAYED
First of all, let me say I do not do Tripadvisor reviews, I work 50 hours a week as a nurse. I am a parent and I have no help, I wouldn’t say “me time” is writing negative reviews about gross places. I’ve traveled to Hawaii multitudes of times, Ireland, Thailand, Mexico and Canada… this place made me never want to travel again. So trust me on this, this condo (number 201) was the most disgusting place I’ve ever stayed. When we first got into the apartment, it was obviously dated and rotting, mildew everywhere, a literal 2 foot hole in the wall next to my five-year-old’s bed. I was in the kitchen a few minutes later, and a litany of roaches flew around the counter. I know they were roaches because when the exterminator came the next day, he confirmed German roaches, beetles, and termites infested the condo- in every room, even crawling on my kids bedsheets. When I went to climb into the master bed, there were hairs from someone else everywhere. The management was able to contact the owners and patched the hole in the wall two days after we arrived but honestly, it doesn’t matter that the exterminator came as the bugs continued to be everywhere throughout our stay, crawling out of my children’s backpacks- some thing that I look forward to having to deal with when I get home as it’s likely they will follow. The least of our worries were the fact that the hot water ran out three minutes after you turned on the faucet and the furniture was extremely uncomfortable and mostly broken. My mom was downstairs in unit 102, it was night and day better than our condo but they still had to turn the breaker on and off when they wanted to use their dishwasher, management confirmed the owners had been counseled that they needed to replace the washer yet had not and there was no plug for the bath. The grills by the pool didn’t work. The only positive thing I can say I enjoyed was the sunrise from the patio and watching my kids swim in the pool. We paid $4500 for a weeklong stay for two separate condos but from the moment we arrived I honestly just wanted to go home. There’s so many other places that you can choose, DO NOT STAY HERE.

Oceanfront doesn’t mean ocean view
My family which includes my wife, 8 year old handicapped son, and au pair stayed at Castle Hana for 9 nights. I purchased two oceanfront rooms. Overall, the location is great. Rooms were ok considering they are condos. This is all the positive i can really say. Here were our issues. 1. We checked in around 10pm on a Saturday night. Security was at the front desk. Although I purchased 2 rooms, they only had one room for us. We moved everything into one room which had only one bed. The property manager would not take our calls. The security could do nothing. Turns out, the second room was in our au pairs name. 2. Our rooms were supposed to be ocean front with an ocean view. Instead our rooms were both in front of the pool and there was no ocean view. If Expedia were setup like VRBO, I could’ve selected an exact unit. Either way, this was not what I paid for. Expedia receipt actually says ocean view. 3. The beach was filled with debris and the water is too rough to swim in. 4. When booking or at no time did the property alert us they were pressure washing and painting the property during our stay. 5. The pool had a heater they never turned on the the ocean was actually warmer. 6. Having no air conditioning is fine until the dozens of cats routinely fight around 3am. 7. The property is non-smoking. Someone in our building was smoking every night. The security guard woke us at 10am trying to catch the smokers. We were all asleep.

5 Reasons I Never Got a Good Night’s Sleep
Ahh. Open air units! Fresh air, the sounds of the waves and birds to sleep to. I’ve stayed in a magical open air hotel in Costa Rica once, so I wasn’t too worried. Let me tell you why I got ZERO good night sleeps here in all 8 nights I stayed. Yes. This place offers NO AIR CONDITIONING! But the warmth isn’t the reason I couldn’t sleep. So the idea is to open all your windows and catch those lovely trade winds. Here are 5 reasons that’s a bad idea here: 1. Chickens. Start crowing anywhere between 1:30am and 3:00am. 2. Cats. You can hear cat fights here nightly. 3. Smokers. It’s a non-smoking facility. But if the tenants around you decide to smoke on their lanais, the smoke gets sucked into your unit. The security guard can do NOTHING about it unless she catches them first hand. 4. Late late LATE check-ins. It’s Hawaii. People are flying in late at times. With the windows open, you can hear the 1:30am arrivals schlep their bags out of their car, up the stairs, dump them on the ground above you and remote lock their cars. And recheck that the car alarms are set. BONUS: I’m writing this on my last night here. It’s 1:48am. I can hear these tired travelers in the unit above me showering. This poor soul is hocking loogies. Yes. I can hear this, people. I can hear the water splashing off his butt and hitting the shower floor. I can hear his companion tromping through the unit as well. 5. People with no mufflers on their cars frequently pass by on the road. Seriously. 2am. Happened several times this week. This is my 8th trip to Hawaii and by far easily the worst place I have ever stayed. Aside from not being able to sleep, the unit was frequently covered with a film of condensation. On the floors. On the furniture. It’s really not the worst part. Just a little gross.
