Disappointing. Poorly run. Don’t book unless very cheap deal available.
Disappointing. Lots of queuing, much of it needless. Loud children’s entertainment audible throughout the restaurants. No sign of management when problem occurs- e.g. when water supply was cut off. Lack of internet because of poor wifi in an area with poor mobile connection. That said, the beach and bay are gorgeous and the facilities (pool, rooms, restaurant) would be good value if hotel were operating well.

This resort is a huge disappointment
For such a large Brand, what a disappointment it was to stay here. Today, the resort had water issues and there was no water available in any of the rooms. There was no air conditioning either as it also needs water to function. After a long day of being at the beach & in the pool, you expect to get to your room and be able to shower and cool off and relax. You cannot even have your sliding doors open, as there are no bug screens. My room was mopped and cleaned at least seven hours ago and my floors are still wet,! Even the mirrors in my room have moisture on them and it must be at least 100° in here. This is not Pura Vida!

Relaxing swim.
The multiple pools were of varying temperatures. This facility was well maintained. The changing rooms and showers and towels were provided .Food and beverages were available for purchase. This was a welcome stop on the tour of Costa Rica.

Cons as well as Pros
We stayed here for three nights as part of a Caravan tour. I'm afraid I have a very mixed review. The grounds and pool area are meticulous and attractive. But more attention must be paid to critical areas, such as the rooms. To be fair, we heard no complaints from other traveling companions and maybe getting a good room is the luck of the draw. Our room was musty and smelled like a wet basement. There were spots of mold around the bathroom. As others have mentioned, the rooms are a bit tired looking, which we don't mind; but the bathroom was ready for complete replacement. This problem goes beyond daily housekeeping as deep scrubbing and disinfecting are required. I asked for a room change but the place was fully-booked every night. There were no lamps in the room, only three pin spots in the ceiling. Oddly, the bulbs were a greenish/yellow tint making it too dark to even be able to read. I reported this and the next day two of the three bulbs were changed. We spent all our time outdoors as the room was so very unpleasant to be in. The buffet pavilion is huge with many offerings. Unfortunately, the food was mostly pretty mediocre. One evening we had dinner in the on-site steak and seafood restaurant, which is located beachside in a spectacular tropical-themed building. Unfortunately again, the food was disappointing, even here. The strong suit at the Barceló Tambor Beach are the grounds, pool area, and bird sanctuary. The beach and view from the beach are attractive but the beach itself is more rough than sandy. Enjoyable to stroll along. The hotel needs a bit of work to be able to fully consider itself a resort.

Speak Spanish
The resort is well laid out, beach was quiet and relaxing. Food was decent with lots of variety. Be prepared for a long car ride from Liberia Airport. Very few staff speak or understand English. All the entertainment was in Spanish. Housekeeping did a great job. Caroline at the pool bar made the best drinks. The night time bar focused their service on the locals staying the resort.
