Barcelo Tropical
The location is good. The room quality is poor. Uncomfortable beds, wet bedding, difficult to get a good nights sleep. The food is average with no variety.

Overall experience was good… but could have been great with a few simple improvements.
Resort layout was excellent. Beach, pool, restaurant, bar, and washroom in close proximity was very convenient during the day. Beach was nice, clear and weed-free. There are some rocky areas in the water, but had decent snorkeling areas with sea turtles, stingrays, and a variety of colourful fish. Rooms are fine, but needed to carry a keycard which was inconvenient… hopefully they upgrade their locks soon. All the reviews about the reluctance to accommodate to larger families is correct. Even though food was relatively good, I would not return with a larger group until this is addressed. If you are looking for a nice activity/adventure… I do recommend walking across the street to visit one of the cenotes… we toured the 5 at Kanton-Chi and it was really good (mix of outdoor, partially covered, and full interior cave cenotes...but may be challenging for younger children or for older individuals with mobility issues. Crossing the street may be a challenge too, but it looks like they may be installing a new path which may include a crosswalk.

Really not a 4.5 star hotel. Terrible experience. Staff is not experienced, if you don’t speak Spanish they don’t give you the same service as if you do. Food was the same every single day, from breakfast to lunch to supper. As for restaurants Santa Fe is by far the best. Capri was ok, Tokyo was ok as well but dress code is ridiculous, women can walk in dressed inappropriately but men dressed with dress shirt till the knees can’t go in unless you wear pants. Hotel is nice but definitely needs an update. Best park of our 10 day experience was the waterpark and dolphin swim.

Family Vacation
Staff at the restaurants were not very attentive had long waits for water , plate replacement and general service. We had a family party of 8 and were told that they could not accommodate us to sit together for meals then we over heard another family of 10 being told that they only accomodate parties of 8 not 10 don't know what that was about. We have been coming to Barcelo for the last 12 years and this is the last trip for us to this resort because of the changes.

Just okay
Room was outdated with rusty furniture, heavy mildew smell, moldy caulk, spots all over the walls, and sagging mattresses. Grounds were generally nice and well kept. Sit-down restaurants were good, but the buffet was not.
