Have gone to Ixtapa since 1987, stayed at the Barcelo 8 out of 9 times. The hotel is very clean and the staff has also been great. Great views and the food is good....remember you are in a different country! This hotel is around 1/4 from US and Canada and 3/4 locals so the cater to locals!, that is all right. The pool is great for kids, so is the beach.

Highly recommended...
We had a wonderful ten days at the hotel -- have stayed there several times over the years. Would highly recommend upgrading to the "Premium " level -- there are lots of perks, including access to a nice lounge and priority booking for the specialty restaurants. The hotel is older but has been well maintained. The location is wonderful -- on a terrific beach and across the street from a golf course. The food has been consistently good (and occasionally very good in the specialty restaurants) every time we have been there. The staff are friendly and helpful.

Good at Barcelo
Nice location, good beach, very friendly servers. It is a definetly not a luxury resort but it provides good value for money paid.

We Keep Coming Back for a Reason
Excellent food variety, security and cleanliness keeps us coming back to the Barceló from Canada! The staff throughout the establishment clearly epitomize the concept of customer service to the highest degree. We will be back again.

Location/staff/cleanliness great. Restaurants and chairs are not.
Location is great. Easy walk to restaurants in Ixtapa. Beach is great to walk on (2 mile stretch). Great views from rooms. Staff are great and friendly (only had one concierge in the premier lounge that seemed like he was disinterested at best) All other staff great on the property. Very clean property and rooms. Property is dated and on the ocean (salt water and metal don’t mix) so some items like the sensors for A/C were finicky. Says it’s 100% non- smoking facility which is not true. Indoors there was no smoking but they had ash trays on some outdoor tables and some people were smoking by the pool. As has been pointed out the chair situation is horrible. We were told, by returning guests, that to get prime chairs put out your towels just after midnight. For nonprime but shaded chairs we struggled to get any by 6 am. Chairs on the beach were available until 8 ish but there are no umbrellas on the beach so shade is only available under some palm trees. We saw chairs that were saved and never used during the day. I do not comment on the buffets because i have low expectations but all of the Ala cart restaurants rated a 1 with me because every one of our meals were cold. The staff and everyone were great but the organization and cooking/delivery process need an overhaul. The shows were typical all inclusive so entertaining and some of the dancers were very good. The first 5 floors have ocean and non ocean facing rooms. The nonocean facing are above the entertainment so there is some noise until 10pm. The street is relatively quiet for a Main Street. All floors above 5 have ocean facing views. The corner rooms do not have balconies but have king beds. The ocean view rooms that have balconies have 2 double beds so you have to decide balcony or king bed. 2 swim up bars, plenty of other opportunity to get drinks (bars and staff walking around). Every bartender makes drinks a little different so find the one you like. There is pickleball, tennis, water aerobics, zumba, table tennis, foosball and a well stocked gym. The area - massages available on the property and if you want reduced prices there many locations on the beach and we had great massages out there at the local huts. A couple of good sports bars (General and Shorties) a 10 min walk from the hotel. Plenty of shops/grocery/restaurants/pharmacys within walking distance. 200ish pesos for a cab to Zihuatanehou (sp) which has its own things to see and restaurants etc. A trip to Ixtapa island for the day was good. Snorkeling/swimming/relaxing easy to do on your own but if your first time then paying a tour guide is worth the lack of stress. The pyramids and small towns in the area are good to see if you want something a little different. Not touristy like some places. Very rustic and just being built up.
