ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? Are you ready for a change of scenery? Are you ready for an American pastime, sporting event, or holiday perhaps somewhere away from your couch, backyard or at the in-laws house? Look no further than a DESTINATION EVENT GETAWAY. I’m talking SuperBowl, 4th of July (yes, our Independence Day outside of our country), the World Series, St. Patty’s Day, Halloween and even Santa Claus will come to your…ummm…oceanview balcony to deliver the goods. He too, could get unlimited cookies and milk! All I’m saying is that it doesn’t hurt to take a break from the norm.
I recently took a trip with two friends to Breathless Cabo San Lucas and our nonstop flight took us to paradise for a week, beginning on the day of the Superbowl. I questioned myself whether I should wait a week and stay in frigid Chicago for the game, but came to the realization that IT JUST MIGHT BE FUN to be away for the big game for once…and far away. I checked out the resort’s Facebook page and found that they were showcasing the game poolside. So GAME ON!
I tell ya, Mexico did American Football right. The moment we approached the party pool, we were quite amazed. The staff had Patriots jerseys on a poolside pigskin-tossing game was happening. Costumes and decor were everywhere and the small details made the difference–from blown up lawn-dwelling linebackers to chocolate footballs on a stick to a football field of guacamole.Because who doesn’t want to dip a chip on the 50-yard line? And who would choose to eat anything without a stick? There was chex mix, ocean-fresh ceviche in a coconut, sandwiches, popcorn and yards of BBQ buffet. All of that right in front of a monstrous screen so you can ooooh and ahhhh Tom Brady all game long. Or if you aren’t a sports fanatic, you still watched the commercials loud and clear. Or perhaps you dug Adam Levine’s tattooed torso halftime show?
Now on to another experience I had south of the border: our nation’s Independence Day. While it’s hard to imagine celebrating this American holiday outside of the country, I found it to be an experience I will never forget. Our neighbors to the south put on quite a show and work hard to impress their guests. What I got from my 4th of July Secrets Playa Mujeres Resort & Spa two years in a row, was Patriotism to the fullest. I witnessed fireworks right off the beach. A fire dance show on top off the pool. Circus-type characters on stilts and workers dressed as Uncle Sams. American bar-b-que and all sorts of red-white-blue. One guest even performed a Katy Perry song in-sync with fireworks. It was truly amazing and the memories will last a lifetime.
So I encourage you to try something new. Dress in shamrock green in the Caribbean. Let cupid shoot an arrow in Mexico. Sing Mele Kalikimaka in Hawaii. Root for your team from across the sea. You just might say “buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks, I don’t care if I’ll never get back!”
