Fiesta Your Way
Though less of a holiday in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has come to be a bit of a Mexican-American celebration of heritage in the United States. Commemorating the victory of the Battle of Puebla against the French military (note: the holiday is not Mexico’s Independence Day, a common misconception), Cinco de Mayo can be a great way to infuse your home life with a bit of Mexican flavor and festivity.
Whether you had originally planned to celebrate on your favorite Mexican beach or in your local neighborhood cantina with friends, here are a few ways (beyond the expected oversized sombreros and bottomless margaritas) to bring the unbridled joy, springtime energy, and festive feeling of Cinco de Mayo into your home.
LISTEN
Stream Mariachi music while you cook, clean, or spend time with your kids.
Or check out Hecho en Mexico, a film that explores the culture of Mexico through music.
WATCH
Speaking of movies, have a Mexican-themed movie night with one (or all) of these amazing flicks.
Frida — a stunning biopic about artist Frida Kahlo
Roma — this award-winning (subtitled) film tells the story of a family in 1970’s Mexico City
Coco — this family-friendly Pixar film beautifully explores the traditions of the Day of the Dead
Like Water for Chocolate — the film adaptation of Laura Esquivel’s beloved novel
EAT
Use your favorite recipe for sheet pan nachos or layered taco dip, and top it with the colors of the Mexican flag: GREEN sliced scallions or cilantro, WHITE cheese or sour cream, and RED salsa or chiles.
Craving a classic? Whip up this simple and satisfying Guacamole recipe courtesy of AMResorts, and dig in (while watching any of the films above!).
DRINK
Mix up some Mexican-inspired mocktails, like these—Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus), Watermelon Lime Agua Fresca, or a fresh twist on a Margarita—for a daytime drink or healthy reward at the end of your day.
Or if you’re wanting an alternative to a classic margarita, try this Summer Squeeze, a refreshing cocktail recipe.
However you choose to celebrate this year, use the hashtag #cincoyourway and show us how you fiesta!
