Mexico is one of our favorite destinations for a sun and sand getaway. There are a few important things you may want to consider, like weather and peak season pricing, before you choose your vacation dates.

Weather trends

The Yucatan Peninsula in east Mexico, including hotspots like Cancun, Riviera Maya, Tulum, and Cozumel, is pleasant year-round, but you’ll see the warmest temperatures in the low 90s between April and October. Rainfall is at its lowest between February and May and at its highest between September and November. Ocean temperatures rarely dip below 80° Fahrenheit.

On the west coast of Mexico along the Pacific Ocean and Sierra Madre Mountains, Puerto Vallarta reaches daily temperatures from the mid-70s to low-80s between December and April. June through October reaches higher temperatures in the 90s, but this period also sees the highest amount of rainfall. November to May are notably drier months, and ocean temperatures reach their highest temperatures in the 80s from June through December.

Los Cabos sits on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and sees a variety of temperatures as a desert climate. You’ll enjoy much less humidity in Los Cabos compared to Puerto Vallarta and East Mexico. The highest temperatures are between June and October, reaching the high-80s and low-90s. The winter months can bring cooler temperatures, sometimes only reaching the mid-60s, but it also brings the least amount of rainfall. Ocean temperatures range from the high-70s and low-80s from July through December.

Best time to find deals

Generally, airfare and resort rates are going to be at their highest between Thanksgiving and Easter. It’s much more budget-friendly to travel during the off-season but do take note this is when destinations are their hottest and at risk of hurricanes. Seasonal trends and holidays

If you’re looking to avoid rowdy spring break crowds, avoid traveling from March to April, or confirm your resort has an anti-spring breaker policy. To marvel at the magnificent humpbacked whales migrating through Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta, plan your getaway during peak whale-watching season between December and March. Amstar DMC, our preferred partner for transfers and excursions, has plenty of amazing whale-watching tours to choose from! Important cultural holidays in Mexico include Semana Santa around Easter and Dia de los Muertos following Halloween, so be sure to consider these celebrations when planning your visit.
