Los Cabos is practically synonymous with adventure. I’ve befriended dolphins, I’ve met the Cabo San Lucas resident sea lion, Poncho, that has made the marina his permanent homestead. Wind has whipped wildly through my hair while racing on a dune buggy alongside the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. More than three times now, I’ve even had the pleasure of experiencing the majestic whale-watching season. There is possibly nothing more exciting, thrilling or awe-inspiring than that experience in nature.
Recently, I managed to kick up some dust in the desert too. ATVs, Dune buggies and horseback riding alongside the Pacific Ocean with Cactus Tours is an absolute must! I booked with Amstar and could not have been more thrilled with my experiences.
Let’s talk ATVs and Razors first. If you have a need for speed, this is your activity! First, each rider is provided a helmet, safety eyewear, and a lesson on how to operate the machinery. Then, be sure to apply plenty of sunblock! You will be provided a locker where you can keep all of your personal items secure.
Then, it’s off you go! The trail starts slowly at first, in order to allow each driver time to get familiar with their vehicle. But once the ocean is visible, the real ride begins! With the wind, the temperatures feel perfect. With the view, your mood is immediately uplifted. And, with the speed, your adrenaline is boosted! With each turn, your confidence begins to soar and it’s easy to feel confident in your driving abilities on the rugged terrain.
My excursion tour leader, Martin, was amazing. Although he was the leader of the pack, he knew exactly what each one of us was doing. If we weren’t following his instructions, he would stop and remind everybody of the rules, as this impacts the safety of everybody. If we wanted to see more of the wild waves of the ocean, he’d give us more time on the beach. We were even given a lesson about the varieties of cacti in the desert.
A few days later, after telling anybody who would listen exactly how much fun I had, I went back to Cactus Tours for another experience. Horseback riding sounded like the perfect escape on a Saturday afternoon. Peter, our tour guide, matched us up to the horse best suited for our skill level. Again, we were given instructions and off we went. But, this time, it was a different trail. The beach was tranquil and serene, as though it was something I had only ever seen in a postcard or in a movie.
My horse, Coyote, was a gentle giant. As we took our time through the desert, I felt bonded to him, as though we were kindred spirits. Personally, I think Coyote enjoyed the views as much as I did. As we followed our trail guide, Peter, though the hillsides of the desert that gave us mountain views and cliffside views of the dark, sparkling sapphire waves, my group wanted to know, “May be ride a little faster?”
And faster, we did. Never in my life did I ever imagine that I would be galloping alongside the ocean on a bright, sunshine-filled day with the wind in my hair and a giant smile on my face. But I did, and dreams were made real.
So, when people ask me why Los Cabos is my favorite destination, I have a few answers for the them:
